Chapter 3 - The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

The front door of my house creaked open, releasing the familiar scent of Daniel’s cedarwood cologne and old paper. The quiet felt predatory now. Leaving my shoes by the entryway, I marched straight into Daniel’s study. The afternoon light filtered through the blinds, casting prison-bar shadows across the polished floorboards.

I dropped to my knees behind the massive desk, running my trembling fingertips over the wood. Just as Emily’s letter had described, near the corner molding, one plank gave way with a faint click under firm pressure. I pried it up using a metal letter opener from the desk. Beneath the subfloor rested a heavy, dark gray steel lockbox, coated in a fine layer of gray dust.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. 10-24-87.

Click. Click. Clack.

The latch popped open with a heavy mechanical snap. Inside lay thick Manila folders, several faded color photographs from the late 1980s, two expired passports bearing names I had never heard before, and an audio cassette tape labeled in faded blue ballpoint ink: For Sarah, when the time runs out.

I picked up the top photograph first. It was a picture of three children standing in front of a white farmhouse with a red barn in the background. A boy of around ten, a little girl of seven with pigtails, and a second little girl with wild blonde curls and missing front teeth.

The little girl with pigtails was unmistakably Emily.

The little girl with wild blonde curls was unmistakably me.

And the ten-year-old boy with the wide, protective grin was Daniel.

I dropped the photograph onto the Persian rug as if it had burned my flesh. Daniel? In a childhood photo with Emily and me?

Daniel and I met when I was twenty-eight at a downtown art gallery opening! He had spilled his black coffee on my beige trench coat, apologized profusely, and asked me out to dinner to make amends. We had laughed about how strange it was that he had just moved to our town from Illinois, completely unconnected to my circle of friends. Emily had met him for the first time at our engagement dinner, warmly shaking his hand and welcoming him into our lives.

It was all an elaborate performance. A meticulously rehearsed, decades-long lie staged by the two people I trusted most on planet Earth. Tears of absolute betrayal blurred my vision as I tore open the adoption decree and police incident reports lying at the very bottom of the box.
