Chapter 6 - A Love Born in Secrecy

The cassette kept playing, unraveling the tapestry of Daniel's confession.

"I didn't enter your life to deceive you for malice, Sarah. Emily wanted a dependable man in your perimeter because she had noticed private investigators poking around town asking questions about cold-case files from 1986. I agreed to meet you at that gallery simply to assess the situation. But the moment you turned around, covered in spilled coffee, laughing that melodic, infectious laugh of yours... I fell completely, utterly, and hopelessly in love with you."

I squeezed my eyes shut as fresh tears tracked down my cheeks. That day at the gallery, Daniel had looked at me with such startling intensity, as if he were seeing an angel. I had thought it was love at first sight. It was, but it was also a man who had heard legends about a girl and finally saw her standing in the sunlight.

"Emily was furious when she realized I wanted to marry you," Daniel confessed with a faint chuckle. "She told me that falling in love violated every rule of protection. She threatened to drag me away, said I was jeopardizing your emotional stability. But I convinced her that the safest place for you was with a husband who knew the real dangers of your past and would take a bullet before letting any ghost from the Vance tragedy touch you."

"Sarah, we never told you because you lived such a bright, peaceful life. You loved the parents who raised you. You didn't suffer the nightmares of that farmhouse fire. Why burden you with blood money, murder, and paranoia? We swore that we would carry the truth to our graves. But before my car accident... I found out that the syndicate’s old legal firm had successfully petitioned the surrogate court to release the sealed trust records. Tomorrow morning, Sarah, is your thirty-seventh birthday. The exact date the probate court unseals your true lineage and makes it public public record."

The pieces fell into place with devastating, crystal clarity. Emily’s cryptic warning on the beach. Tomorrow, you're going to find out who I really am. She knew that on Monday morning, lawyers, media outlets, and old enemies might descend on my front lawn.
