Chapter 5 - The Emergency Boardroom

At precisely eight-thirty the following morning, the thirty-second floor of the Vale-Holloway corporate tower was engulfed in absolute chaos. Executives in rumpled suits ran between glass offices clutching red emergency folders, while three separate telephone lines rang incessantly at every administrative desk.

I stepped out of the private express elevator accompanied by Raymond Vance and two junior partners carrying heavy leather briefcases. I had replaced my mourning dress with a tailored charcoal pantsuit, my mother's silver pendant resting proudly over my silk blouse.

The double doors of the central boardroom swung open, revealing twelve senior board members huddled around a massive marble conference table. Grant sat at the far end, looking completely destroyed; his tie was crooked, his expensive suit wrinkled from his overnight drive, and dark purple circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes.

Beside him sat Madison, clutching her designer bag like a protective shield, while Patricia paced frantically near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown Chicago. Nolan was slouched in a corner chair, staring at the floor, completely stripped of the smirking arrogance he had displayed at Gate C18.

"She's here," someone whispered, and the entire room went dead silent.

Grant shot up from his chair, knocking over a half-empty glass of water that soaked a stack of financial reports. "Elena! Stop this insane vendetta! You're destroying a company that has been in my family for three generations!"

Raymond Vance stepped forward, placing a thick stack of certified documents squarely on the table with a sharp, echoing slap. "Mr. Holloway, this company was saved from bankruptcy five years ago exclusively by Ruth Mercer's private capital. Your family owned the name on the door; Elena's family owned the roof, the floor, and the chairs you are currently sitting on."

Patricia rushed toward me, her eyes wild with terror and venom. "Elena, you ungrateful little witch! We took you in! We gave you a respectable name! We invited you into high society, and this is how you repay our kindness?!"

"Kindness?" I asked, turning to face Patricia with a gaze so cold she instinctively stopped two feet short. "You didn't take me in, Patricia. You used my marriage to extract private introductions to regional transit boards while ridiculing my mother's humble home behind her back."

"Elena, please," Grant stammered, walking toward me with his hands outstretched in a pathetic gesture of reconciliation. "I made a mistake at the airport. I was stressed. Madison means nothing to me—it was just a stupid, meaningless distraction! We can fix this, baby. We can go home to Lake Forest and start over."

Madison’s head snapped up, her face twisting in utter disbelief and betrayal. "What did you just say, Grant?! You told me last night you loved me! You promised me half of his estate once the divorce went through!"

"Shut up, Madison!" Grant screamed, turning on her with raw, unfiltered desperation. "You ruined my life! If you hadn't demanded to take that stupid flight, none of this would have happened!"

"Gentlemen of the board," I interrupted, my voice cutting through their pathetic squabbling like a scalpel. "The time is eight-forty-two. In eighteen minutes, the Mercer Trust will exercise its legal right to seize all operating equity and liquidate the corporate assets to satisfy the defaulted ninety-million-dollar bond."

The board chairman, an elderly logistics veteran named Harold Miller, immediately stood up, looking at Grant with pure disgust. "Unless what, Mrs. Holloway? There must be a resolution that preserves the jobs of our two thousand employees."

"There is," I said, looking Harold dead in the eye. "Every member of the Holloway family must resign from this corporation immediately, effective this second. Their shares will be forfeited back to the treasury to partially offset the debt, and Grant Holloway will sign an unconditional, uncontested divorce settlement waiving all claims to my family's estate."

Grant stared at me, his jaw trembling violently. "You're stripping me of everything. My job, my shares, my family's legacy... you're leaving me with nothing!"

"I am leaving you with exactly what you brought into my life, Grant," I replied softly. "Nothing."
