Chapter 2 - Grounded and Trapped

The regional director, a tall silver-haired man named Arthur Sterling, moved with urgent, purposeful strides, clutching a secured black tablet in his left hand. The moment his eyes swept the counter and landed on my face, he came to an immediate halt and offered a deep, respectful nod.

"Mrs. Holloway," Arthur said, his voice firm and instantly commanding the attention of the entire surrounding terminal. "We received the emergency security flag from Corporate Trust Headquarters in New York the moment your credentials were authenticated."

Grant swallowed hard, trying desperately to regain his footing as he stepped between Arthur and me. "Mr. Sterling, I am Grant Holloway, executive director at Vale-Holloway. There has been a clerical misunderstanding regarding our flight seating arrangements."

Arthur looked at Grant as if he were an insect crawling across a polished dining table. He didn't offer a handshake, nor did he acknowledge Grant's title.

"Mr. Holloway, you are currently standing on private commercial property leased exclusively by Crestline Air Holdings," Arthur said coldly. "And under directive code four-dash-nine, all discretionary ticket allocations associated with corporate accounts are subject to immediate revocation by the principal owner."

Madison took a small, instinctive step backward, quietly attempting to slip my stolen boarding pass into her oversized leather tote bag. But Marcus was already one step ahead, his fingers moving across his keyboard with rapid, decisive strokes.

"Boarding pass canceled," Marcus announced clearly over the gate microphone, ensuring every passenger waiting in the lobby heard the words. "Seat 2A, originally issued to Elena Holloway and illegally reissued to Madison Vale, is voided."

Madison let out a sharp gasp, freezing in place as if she had been slapped across the cheek. "What do you mean, voided? We have an important gala in Chicago tomorrow night! Grant bought those tickets with his corporate account!"

"With a corporate account backed by my mother's collateral," I said, taking one slow, deliberate step toward her. "An account that was frozen the moment her death certificate was registered with the national probate clearinghouse at noon today."

Grant lunged forward, grabbing his phone from his breast pocket and dialing furiously with trembling thumbs. "I'll call the bank right now. This is illegal seizure of corporate funds! I will have you fired by morning, Sterling!"

He held the phone to his ear, pacing in tight circles while Patricia watched him with mounting dread. Seconds later, Grant pulled the device away from his ear, staring at the blank screen in utter disbelief.

"My card was declined..." Grant whispered, his voice cracking down the middle. "My entire corporate profile has been suspended."

Nolan stepped backward, pocketing his phone completely as he looked around at the dozen curious passengers who had started filming the spectacle. "Grant, we need to go. People are watching. This is getting out of hand."

"No one is boarding Flight 882 until this situation is resolved," Arthur stated firmly, turning his attention to the four airport police officers. "Officers, please escort Mr. Holloway, his mother, and his companions away from Gate C18. They are creating a public disturbance."

"Disturbance?!" Patricia shrieked, her voice echoing off the vaulted steel beams of the terminal ceiling. "Do you know who we are? We are the Holloways of Lake Forest! You cannot treat us like common street vagrants!"

The lead police officer stepped between Patricia and the counter, his hand resting calmly on his utility belt. "Ma'am, you need to lower your voice and step away from the gate immediately, or you will be placed under arrest for trespassing on restricted airport grounds."

Madison looked at Grant with wide, terrified eyes, realizing for the first time that the man she had attached herself to had no real power. The illusion of his invincible wealth was crumbling right in front of her perfectly contoured nose.

"Grant, do something!" Madison hissed, pulling at his arm. "Tell them who you are!"

Grant stood motionless, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly, while the gate agent finalized the total lockout of his travel profile.
