Chapter 7 - The Grand Society Gala

The Fairmont Copley Plaza’s Grand Ballroom was a spectacle of gilded opulence. Crystal chandeliers dripped from ornate ceilings, casting sparkling light across three hundred guests clad in bespoke tuxedos and designer evening gowns. The room buzzed with the high-stakes chatter of biotech venture capitalists, hedge fund managers, and pharmaceutical lobbyists.

Graham stood near the elevated stage, a glass of champagne in hand, holding court among a group of wealthy European investors. He was in his element—charismatic, flawless, radiating the effortless confidence of a young titan on the verge of conquering the medical world.

""AstraCore isn't just treating neural decline,"" Graham announced smoothly to the nodding investors. ""Our upcoming clinical results will prove that we can stabilize genetic variants previously thought incurable. Within five years, this company will redefine longevity.""

From the shadows of the mezzanine balcony above, I watched him.

I was dressed in an elegant midnight-blue velvet gown that Marcus’s paralegal had helped me purchase that afternoon. My silver hair was swept up into a sophisticated chignon, adorned with antique pearl pins. Behind me stood Marcus Campbell, sharp in a black tuxedo, alongside two plainclothes federal agents from the Department of Justice and an official videographer.

""Is the feed ready?"" I asked softly.

""The banquet AV system has been fully patched,"" Marcus whispered back, checking his tablet. ""Dr. Keller was intercepted in the parking garage twenty minutes ago by federal prosecutors. The moment they showed him the evidence of your poisoning and threatened him with twenty years as an accessory to attempted murder, he cracked completely. He surrendered AstraCore's internal encrypted server keys. Everything is loaded.""

""And Graham?""

""He has no idea,"" Marcus smiled. ""He’s about to introduce AstraCore’s promotional keynote video.""

Down on the floor, the master of ceremonies stepped to the podium. ""Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed investors, please welcome to the stage the primary patron and visionary behind AstraCore Therapeutics, Mr. Graham Hollis!""

Polite, enthusiastic applause rippled through the ballroom as Graham stepped up the stairs, adjusting his bow tie, flashing his trademark million-dollar smile.

""Thank you, everyone,"" Graham spoke into the microphone, his voice rich and commanding. ""Tonight is about hope. It is about the relentless pursuit of healing those who are slipping away from us. Every breakthrough requires dedication, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to the human spirit. Tonight, I am proud to share with you the remarkable journey of our Phase 2 development.""

Graham gestured grandly toward the massive, fifty-foot LED projection screen behind him. ""Roll the presentation.""

The ballroom lights dimmed to near total darkness.

Graham turned toward the screen, waiting for the slick corporate animation of DNA strands and glowing neurons.

Instead, the speakers emitted a sharp electronic hiss.

Then, a face appeared on the giant screen, twenty feet tall, illuminated in pristine 4K clarity.

It was Graham Hollis.

He was standing in our home kitchen, illuminated by the recessed spotlights, peering nervously around the empty room before pulling a dark glass dropper bottle from his pocket and carefully squeezing three amber drops into my favorite porcelain teacup.

May you like

A stunned, confused murmur broke out across the three hundred guests.

Graham froze, his smile instantly curdling into a mask of pure shock. ""What... what is this? Turn that off! AV crew, shut that down!""
