Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The executive boardroom on the thirty-second floor of the Cross Heritage Tower in downtown Cleveland was a temple of polished marble, floor-to-ceiling glass, and dark mahogany. Outside, the storm had finally cleared, leaving behind a brilliant, cold midday sun that glinted off the city skyline.
At one-forty-five in the afternoon, Glenn Cross stood at the head of the long conference table, adjusting the cuffs of his thousand-dollar navy suit. He looked relaxed, radiant with triumph, chatting cordially with the two board members seated to his right. He was twenty minutes away from fulfilling his lifelong ambition of becoming the undisputed master of the family empire.
The double doors at the back of the boardroom swung open with a resounding thud.
The room went instantly dead silent.
Glenn frowned, turning toward the interruption with an expression of sharp annoyance. ""Excuse me, this is a closed executive session—""
The words died in his throat.
Walking into the room, tall and dignified despite his cane, was David Cross. Flanking him was Sarah Lin, carrying two thick leather briefcases. Behind them walked Noah, clean-shaven, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit David had purchased for him that morning, his chin held high.
And walking right between them was me. In my arms, wrapped in a pristine cream-colored blanket, was baby Maya.
Glenn’s face drained of every drop of color. His knuckles went white against the edge of the conference table. ""Catherine? What... what is the meaning of this charade? Noah, how dare you step foot inside this building!""
""Sit down, Glenn,"" David commanded, his voice cutting through the room with the force of a gavel. ""You are no longer running this meeting.""
""David, you're out of order!"" Glenn shouted, his voice cracking with sudden, hysterical panic as the other board members began murmuring in confusion. ""Security! Call building security immediately and have these trespassers removed!""
""Security has already been instructed to stand down by the corporate general counsel,"" Sarah Lin stated calmly, stepping forward and dropping a heavy stack of certified legal filings onto the center of the table. ""Mr. Glenn Cross, you are formally served with an emergency injunction issued two hours ago by the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. All executive authority granted to you by this board is suspended immediately pending an investigation into grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and criminal intimidation.""
""This is an outrage! It’s a coup!"" Glenn stammered, looking frantically around the table at his cousins. ""They're trying to sabotage the vote! Don't listen to them!""
I stepped directly up to the table, staring straight into the eyes of the man I had shared a bed with for twenty-four years. I felt no fear. I felt no sorrow. I felt only a pure, burning clarity.
""This is Maya Vance, Glenn,"" I said, my voice carrying into every corner of the silent boardroom. ""She is eight days old. She is your daughter. Her mother died alone in a clinic because you refused to acknowledge her existence, and you tried to throw this child into the state foster system to hide your theft.""

I opened Glenn’s confidential ledger and dropped it right in front of our eldest cousin, who was the board's head of ethics.
""Every dollar he used to buy Amelia Vance's silence was embezzled from the Riverstone account,"" I told the board. ""And when our son discovered his crime, Glenn threatened to destroy his life and threw him onto the street. Look at the papers, gentlemen. Look at your future CEO.""
