Chapter 7 - Unmasking the Monster

The warm kitchen smelled of cedar smoke, roasted coffee, and old books. David sat at the heavy farmhouse table, his reading glasses pushed up on his forehead as he examined the documents, bank transfers, and paternity affidavits spread across the scarred pine surface. Opposite him sat his longtime personal attorney, Sarah Lin, whom David had summoned from her nearby home twenty minutes after our arrival.
Baby Maya had been fed and was sleeping peacefully in an antique wicker cradle that David’s late wife had preserved in the guest room. For the first time in twelve agonizing months, Noah sat at a real table with a hot bowl of soup, his shoulders slowly dropping from their permanent posture of defensive tension.
""This is worse than corporate malfeasance,"" Sarah Lin said, tapping her pen against the non-disclosure agreement Glenn had forced upon Amelia Vance. ""This is gross intimidation, misappropriation of company assets to conceal personal illicit activities, and potential criminal extortion. He used Cross Heritage operational accounts to fund Riverstone Asset Management, which means every dollar he paid to hush Amelia came directly from shareholder equity.""
David removed his glasses, his face etched with a mixture of profound grief and boiling fury. ""I knew Glenn was ambitious, Catherine. I knew he was cold. When we founded this firm with our uncles thirty years ago, he was always the one who cared only about the bottom line, never about the people we served. But I never imagined he could be this monstrous. To cast Noah out into the streets... to discard his own infant daughter like an accounting error...""
David reached across the table and placed his weathered, shaking hand over Noah’s. ""You showed incredible courage, son. You risked your entire future to protect a defenseless young woman and this innocent child. Your father isn't fit to shine your shoes.""
Noah swallowed hard, tears shining in his eyes. ""Uncle David, he’s going to take over the firm tomorrow. If he becomes CEO, he controls the legal department. He told me he would have his lawyers draft criminal complaints against me for stealing proprietary company documents.""
""He won't draft a single document,"" David said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute executive authority that reminded me why our uncles had chosen him to lead the company for decades. ""Glenn called the extraordinary board meeting for tomorrow at two o’clock because he believes I am too weak to attend. He believes he has secured five of the eight voting proxy seats by promising increased dividend payouts to our cousins.""
David looked at Sarah Lin. ""Sarah, do we have enough here to execute an immediate emergency petition for judicial intervention and a board injunction?""
""We have more than enough,"" Sarah replied, a grim smile touching her lips. ""Under Article Nine of the corporate charter, any officer engaging in felonious misappropriation of funds or actions that present catastrophic reputational risk can be suspended immediately by a joint petition of the Chairman and twenty-five percent of voting shares. David, you still hold thirty percent of the founding stock.""
Sarah then turned to me. ""And Catherine, under Ohio marital property law, you hold an equitable interest in Glenn’s executive shares. If you sign an emergency motion for the preservation of assets tonight, Glenn cannot exercise his voting proxy tomorrow without your explicit consent.""

I looked at the legal documents on the table. For twenty-four years, I had signed whatever Glenn placed before me, trusting him blindly, excusing his temper, and shrinking myself to keep the peace.
""Give me the pen,"" I said.
