Chapter 7 - Confronting the Architect

By eight o'clock that evening, the rain had turned into a torrential downpour, beating against the metal hood of David's truck like a thousand brass hammers. We had picked up the custom desktop PC from Mr. Miller, who had gladly handed it back over the moment David explained what was at stake. Together with Micah Turner and his father, we drove across town, leaving the dilapidated neon lights of the Pinecrest Motel behind as we ascended into the manicured, gated hills of the Oakridge Country Club Estates.

The Wallace residence was an imposing, modern mansion of limestone and glass, lit up by opulent landscape spotlights that washed the sprawling front lawn in golden radiance. Three luxury German SUVs sat parked in the broad, circular driveway.

David didn't hesitate. He pulled our dust-covered pickup right between a Porsche and a Mercedes, cut the engine, and stepped out into the rain. Mr. Turner stepped out beside him. Nolan and Micah walked together behind them, two boys bound by an ugly crime and an extraordinary pursuit of justice.

David marched up the flagstone steps and pressed the glowing bronze doorbell.

Moments later, the heavy oak door swung open. Richard Wallace stood there, wearing a cashmere sweater and holding a tumbler of scotch. His hair was slicked back, and his face was flushed with the comfortable arrogance of a man who had never faced a consequence he couldn't buy his way out of. Behind him, lounging on an Italian leather sectional in the grand foyer, was Trent Wallace, scrolling lazily on his iPhone.

""David Bennett?"" Wallace said, his brow furrowing in irritation as he took in our soaked clothes and our mud-spattered boots. ""What the hell is this? If this is about your son's disciplinary issue, call my office during business hours. I don't conduct school board business on my front porch.""

""We aren't here for school board business, Richard,"" David said, stepping forward so firmly that Wallace instinctively took half a step backward into the hall. ""We're here about criminal fraud, digital forgery, and targeted terroristic threats against an impoverished minor.""

Trent’s head snapped up from his phone. His smug expression vanished instantly, replaced by a sickly, greenish pallor as he spotted Micah Turner standing on the porch behind my husband.

""Are you out of your mind?"" Wallace snarled, trying to slam the door.

David caught the heavy oak edge with his broad palm, shoving it wide open. ""Trent fabricated screenshots, Richard. He used a digital spoofing script to impersonate my son, posted a picture of an eight-year-old girl, and threatened to throw a brick through a family's window to force an eviction. We have the raw JSON Discord logs, the cryptographic Snapchat server cache extracted from Nolan’s PC drive, and the exact IP address from your home Wi-Fi network timestamped at 8:42 PM on Thursday night.""

""You're bluffing,"" Wallace spat, though his voice cracked slightly. He looked over his shoulder at his son. ""Trent, what is this garbage?""

Trent scrambled off the couch, his breathing shallow and rapid. ""Dad, they're lying! They’re just trying to get Nolan out of trouble! He's poor, his family is broke, they’re desperate!""

""Show him, Micah,"" David commanded calmly.

Micah stepped forward, holding out David’s heavy-duty tablet. On the high-resolution screen, a recorded video played. It was an extraction of Trent's private Snapchat cloud, captured during the live sync. But even more damning was what Micah opened next: a 47-second audio memo Trent had sent to his secondary group chat at 9:15 PM on Thursday, laughing hysterically into his microphone:

'Yo, Bennett just ran to Henderson like a little rat, but Henderson’s out cold in the hospital. I just photoshopped Bennett's handle over the brick-threat message. Ward already hates his guts because his mom filed that complaint about the budget last year. Bennett's getting expelled, and Turner’s family is getting run out of town. We’re untouchable, boys.'

The grand foyer fell into a silence so profound you could hear the ice cubes clinking in Richard Wallace’s trembling glass. Trent’s face crumpled. He dropped to his knees on the marble floor, bursting into hysterical tears. ""Dad... Dad, please... I didn't think they could pull the server logs... I didn't think anyone would care about Turner!""
