Chapter 6 - The Digital Trail

We crowded into the tiny, humid motel room out of the freezing rain. The small space smelled of cheap disinfectant, damp wool, and stale coffee. Micah sat on the edge of the second double bed, staring at Nolan, who sat across from him on a rickety laminate chair. Between them, David had placed his heavy construction tablet on the low table.
""Micah,"" David said gently, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. ""Did you ever see the full group chat thread with your own eyes, or did Principal Ward only show you the printed screenshots?""
""Only the screenshots,"" Micah muttered, staring down at his duct-taped shoes. ""Ward called me into her office at nine this morning. She had four pages printed out. Nolan’s message about the GoFundMe was at the very top. Then there were messages mocking our clothes, calling us vermin, and then... Lily’s picture. Underneath Lily’s picture, the admin account had written, 'Ten bucks to whoever throws a brick through their window.' The profile name on that account was 'Nolan B.'""
Nolan gasped, clutching his stomach as if he’d been punched. ""I never wrote that! Mom, I swear on my life, I never wrote that!""
""He didn't,"" Micah said quietly, surprising everyone in the room.
We all froze. Principal Ward had treated those screenshots like gospel truth. I stepped toward Micah. ""What do you mean, Micah?""
Micah reached into his backpack and pulled out an old, cracked smartphone with a heavily taped screen. ""Trent Wallace is an idiot. He thinks because my family is poor, I don't know how to code. Trent blocked me from the main Snapchat group, but he forgot that I still had his secondary gaming account linked to my old Discord server from middle school. On Thursday night, before Trent deleted the chat history, I ran a cloud-sync backup of our mutual server channels.""
Micah plugged his phone into David's tablet with a frayed USB cable. The screen flickered, and a massive wall of blue and gray chat logs cascaded down the display.
""Look at the timestamps,"" Micah pointed with a calloused finger. ""Thursday afternoon, 4:15 PM. Nolan leaves the Snapchat group. See that system notification? 'User NolanBennett has left the chat.' That was ten minutes after school let out.""
""When was the picture of Lily posted?"" David demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.
""Thursday night at 8:42 PM,"" Micah showed us the screen. ""Four hours after Nolan left. And look at who changed the admin display name at 8:40 PM. The account ID belongs to Trent Wallace's registered phone number. Trent changed his own display name to 'Nolan B.', posted the photo of Lily, typed the threat about throwing a brick through our motel window, took the screenshot, and then changed his display name back to 'T-Wall'.""
My hands were shaking with pure adrenaline. It was cold, calculated, malicious forgery designed not just to avoid punishment, but to utterly annihilate another boy's reputation and life. Trent had fabricated evidence of a domestic terror threat, attributed it to my son, and handed it directly to a school administrator who was all too eager to protect her wealthy benefactor.
""Can you export this metadata with the cryptographic time-hashes?"" David asked, his construction-foreman precision kicking in.
""Yeah,"" Micah nodded, his jaw setting with a fierce determination that mirrored my son’s. ""I can export the raw JSON file right now. It proves the screenshots Ward has were completely staged.""
""That's not all,"" Nolan suddenly said, his eyes widening with realization. ""Dad... my gaming PC!""
David frowned. ""What about it, buddy?""
May you like
""When I built that computer, I set up a secondary hard drive partition for network backups. It had my phone’s automatic cloud backup synced to it every time I connected to our home Wi-Fi! Even though Trent blocked me and kicked me off the group, the raw cache files from my phone synced to that hard drive on Sunday morning before I unplugged it to sell it to Mr. Miller!""
David stood up so fast his chair wobbled. ""Mr. Miller hasn't wiped the drive yet. He told me yesterday he was waiting until his son's birthday this coming Friday to format it and install the new operating system.""
