Chapter 2 - The Pantry Cell

"Explain," Salvatore commanded, stepping into the room with measured, deliberate strides that commanded absolute silence. The two armed enforcers flanking him moved with practiced discipline, fanning out to block both the door and the private balcony exit.

"Mr. Moretti, it's a miracle," Elena stammered, pointing a trembling hand at the fluctuating telemetry monitors. "Lorenzo’s brainwave activity surged out of baseline for the first time in seven weeks. His motor cortex responded. He squeezed this child's hand. He tried to speak!"

Salvatore didn't look thrilled. He didn't smile, nor did he rush to his nephew's bedside with the tearful relief of a loving family member. Instead, his jaw hardened into stone, and a dangerous shadow crossed his weathered features. His calculating eyes narrowed as he stared at Mia, who buried her face deep into the crook of my neck, whimpering softly.

"A miracle?" Salvatore muttered, his voice dropping into a chilling register. "Or a catastrophic breach of protocol? Who authorized this woman and her brat onto the secure floor?"

"I'm so sorry, sir!" I cried out, stepping backward until my spine hit the edge of a heavy medical cart. "My daughter wandered off while I was folding linens downstairs. She heard the machinery and got lost. She didn't mean any harm, I swear to God! We'll leave immediately. You don't even have to pay me for the day. Just let me take my baby home."

Salvatore ignored my desperate plea completely. He turned his head toward the largest enforcer, a scarred man with cauliflower ears whom he addressed as Bruno.

"Take the child and the girl down to the basement dry-storage pantry," Salvatore instructed coldly. "Confiscate their belongings, search their pockets for recording devices, and bolt the exterior door. Nobody goes in, nobody comes out until I determine how much damage has been done."

"No! Please don't touch her!" I screamed, kicking and twisting as Bruno grabbed my shoulder with fingers like steel vices. Another guard pried Mia’s stuffed rabbit from her hands and tossed it onto the carpet, while Bruno hauled me backward out into the hallway.

"Mommy! Mommy!" Mia wailed, her terrified cries echoing off the high ceilings of the estate.

They dragged us down the service stairs, past the opulent portraits and golden chandeliers, deep into the windowless bowels of the mansion. Bruno shoved us into a cold, concrete-walled room lined with heavy industrial metal shelves holding canned goods and bulk dry rice. The heavy steel door slammed shut with a deafening thud, followed by the sound of three heavy deadbolts turning into place.

Total darkness swallowed us for a horrifying second before an automated yellow emergency bulb flickered to life near the ceiling.

I sank onto the concrete floor, pulling Mia into my lap and rocking her back and forth as she sobbed hysterically. My hands shook so violently I could barely smooth down her tangled curls.

"It's okay, sweetie, Mommy's here," I whispered over and over, though every instinct inside me told me we were in deadly peril. "Mommy is right here. Nothing is going to hurt you."

Ten minutes later, the small viewing slot in the iron door slid open with a screech of rusted metal. The cold, reptilian eyes of Salvatore Moretti peered inside at us.

"You should have kept your child on a leash, Clara," Salvatore said, his voice muffled by the thick steel. "You thought she was just being sweet. But forty-nine days ago, I made a very expensive arrangement to ensure my nephew never woke up from that ambush. Your little girl just undid millions of dollars in careful planning. And in my world, whoever threatens the succession signs their own death warrant."
