Chapter 10 - Sunshine on the Horizon

"This is a legal trust fund established under Mia's name," Lorenzo explained, turning the documents toward me. "It is fully funded with twenty-five million dollars, completely laundered, clean, and untouchable by any tax authority or federal agency. It will cover her education, her future, and provide you with an annual stipend of five hundred thousand dollars for the rest of your natural life."

My jaw dropped. The room seemed to spin. "Mr. Moretti... Lorenzo... I can't accept this. This is too much money. We're just simple people."

"It is not a payment, Clara. It is a debt of honor," Lorenzo said firmly, leaving no room for argument. "In my world, loyalty and blood are repaid ten times over. But that is only the beginning. My family owns a coastal property in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Three acres overlooking the Pacific, gated, peaceful, and thousands of miles away from New York and the mafia."

He slid a set of brass keys and a deed across the table.

"The deed is in your name. There are no strings attached. No underworld connections. You will have full custody, absolute freedom, and an elite private security team stationed discreetly in the town to ensure nobody ever threatens your peace again. You will never have to scrub another stranger's floor. You will never have to worry about where your next meal comes from."

I looked down at the keys, then at the bright gold sunshine necklace, and finally at my daughter, who was humming softly as she made her bunny hop across the carpet. For eighteen months, I had lived in terror, dreading every eviction notice, every missed paycheck, and every cold night in the laundromat. In one single, terrifying night, our nightmare had turned into salvation.

I wiped away a tear, looking Lorenzo straight in his dark, intense eyes. "Thank you. Truly."

"Thank her," Lorenzo said with a soft chuckle, gesturing toward Mia.

Lorenzo knelt down on one knee beside the Persian rug, bringing his formidable frame down to my daughter’s eye level. He gently fastened the gold sun necklace around her little neck.

"Listen to me, little sunshine," Lorenzo whispered, his voice softer than anyone in New York would ever believe possible. "If anyone ever scares you, or if you ever need a friend, you tell your mother to call the number on the back of that pendant. Understand? Uncle Lorenzo will cross the entire world for you."

Mia giggled and reached out, patting his cheek with her sticky fingers just like she had done in the hospital room. "Don't be scared, mister. I won't let the thunder get you."

Lorenzo let out a deep, hearty laugh—the first real laugh to echo through the halls of the Moretti estate in years.

Two days later, Mia and I stood on the sun-drenched wooden deck of our new home in Carmel. The cool Pacific breeze carried the scent of salt and blooming jasmine, while the rhythmic crashing of the waves washed away every lingering echo of sirens and gunshots. Mia was chasing butterflies through the green grass, her gold sun pendant catching the brilliant California light with every skip.

For the first time in our lives, the storm had completely passed. The dark days were gone, and the road ahead was filled with nothing but pure, golden sunshine.
