Chapter 1 - The Fluttering Eyelids

Underneath those pale, paper-thin lids, Lorenzo Moretti's eyes were darting violently in rapid motion. A tremor traveled straight from his temples down into his broad, scarred shoulders. Elena’s hand froze an inch above the crimson emergency button on the wall, her breath catching in her throat like jagged glass. She was an experienced critical-care nurse who had seen death claim dozens of men, but she had never witnessed a neurological resurrection triggered by a nursery rhyme.
"Look at his fingers," Elena gasped under her breath, terrified that speaking too loudly might break the fragile spell.
I rushed forward across the thick carpet, my maternal instincts screaming louder than my terror of the mafia. Mia was still perched on the oversized armchair, her little fingers completely swallowed by Lorenzo's calloused palm. And then I saw it clearly: the tips of his thumb and forefinger slowly curled inward, pressing gently against the back of Mia’s tiny wrist. It wasn't a random seizure or an involuntary spasm. It was deliberate. It was the instinctive, protective grasp of a man clawing his way out of an abyss because someone had finally reached down into the dark.
"Mia, baby, let go," I pleaded, kneeling beside the armchair and wrapping my shaking arms around my daughter’s waist. "We have to leave right now. We broke the rules. We shouldn't be up here."
"No, Mommy, look!" Mia pointed her free hand at Lorenzo’s face, her round brown eyes shining with innocent wonder. "The sleeping mister is holding my hand! He likes the sunshine song. He squeezed me, Mommy. Just like you do when the lightning comes!"
Before I could pry her fingers loose, the monitor’s rhythmic pulse spiked into a high, sustained tone. The screen flashed eighty-five beats per minute, then ninety-two. Lorenzo’s chest heaved upward against the tight mechanical ventilator strap. A dry, ragged sound tore from his throat, rattling through the oxygen mask. His jaw clenched so hard the muscles along his shaved jawline strained against his pale skin.
Elena finally slammed her palm down against the emergency call button.
"Code Blue neurological response in room two!" she shouted into the wall intercom, her voice trembling with sheer adrenaline. "I need Dr. Vance and the on-call team right now! The patient is exhibiting active voluntary motor function!"
Heavy boots began thundering down the corridor outside, vibrating the hardwood beneath our feet. My blood went icy cold. I grabbed Mia around her middle and yanked her into my arms, tearing her away from Lorenzo’s bed. As her little fingers slipped free from his grip, his entire arm twitched upward off the mattress, grasping at empty air as if searching for the warmth that had just slipped through his fingers. A deep, guttural groan vibrated beneath his mask, followed by an agonizingly sharp drop on the monitor.
The heavy oak door was violently kicked open, slamming hard against the adjacent wall. Three massive men dressed in tailored black suits poured into the room, their hands resting ominously inside the lapels of their jackets. Behind them stood an older man with silver hair combed neatly back and eyes as cold and gray as slate.

It was Salvatore Moretti, Lorenzo's uncle and the acting head of the family empire.
"What is the meaning of this racket?" Salvatore’s gravelly voice sliced through the hum of the monitors like a straight razor. His gaze swept over the frantic nurse, landed on the thrashing figure of his nephew in the bed, and finally locked onto me, clutching a frightened three-year-old girl against my faded uniform.
