Chapter 6 - Uncovering the Truth

With the mercenary strike crushed, the immediate physical threat was neutralized, but the legal and financial web strangling Ava’s future remained tangled.

The following morning, my personal legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton, arrived at the penthouse carrying two thick leather briefcases. Pendelton was a sixty-year-old corporate attorney who had navigated federal tax codes for three decades; nothing shocked him, but as he opened the sealed manila envelopes on my study desk, his eyebrows rose in genuine astonishment.

""The DNA results from the private lab in Zurich just cleared encrypted transmission, Dominic,"" Arthur said, adjusting his spectacles. ""It’s beyond a statistical doubt. Ava is Gabriel’s biological daughter. A direct Valente.""

I looked across the desk at the document. Seeing the names printed in cold, black-and-white ink—Gabriel Valente, Father; Ava Valente, Child—brought a profound, quiet weight into the room.

""And the offshore trust?"" I asked.

""Your father’s estate was brilliant in its cruelty,"" Arthur explained, pointing a manicured finger at a clause on page fourteen. ""The Valente Family Foundation Trust, valued at four hundred and twelve million dollars, was placed in an irrevocable Swiss trust following Gabriel’s disappearance. It dictates that if Gabriel dies, his rightful heir inherits the full capital upon reaching the age of twenty-five. However, during the heir's minority, the trust can only be accessed and managed by an appointed legal guardian.""

""Costello,"" I realized aloud, my eyes narrowing.

""Precisely,"" Arthur nodded. ""Costello forged an adoption decree three months ago through a corrupt family court judge in Cook County. If he had secured Ava, he would have legally presented himself as her court-appointed guardian, liquidating the entire four-hundred-million-dollar corpus into untraceable offshore shells within forty-eight hours.""

""Where is the forged decree now?""

""We subpoenaed the judge’s private safe an hour ago under federal oversight,"" Arthur said with a thin, victorious smile. ""The judge folded immediately. He gave up Costello's remaining offshore coordinates, along with bank accounts detailing the payments made to the hitmen who ambushed Gabriel last year.""

Just then, Sophia walked into the study, holding a tray with fresh tea. She had tried to revert to her role as a caretaker, but the dynamic between us had fundamentally shifted. She wore a tailored wool dress I had purchased for her, her posture no longer hunched in fear, her gaze steady and dignified.

""You don't need to serve tea, Sophia,"" I said gently, gesturing toward the empty leather armchair opposite Arthur. ""Please, sit down. This concerns you.""

Sophia hesitated, then set the tray on the side credenza and took a seat.

""Arthur has finalized the paperwork,"" I told her. ""Costello’s legal claim to Ava is completely incinerated. The federal warrants against him have been upgraded to capital conspiracy and murder. But there is another matter we must resolve: Ava’s custody.""

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. She looked down at her hands, fear flickering across her features once more. ""I know I have no legal right to her, Mr. Valente. I’m just an aunt by affection. Elena wasn't her biological mother either—she just saved her life. If... if you want to assume full custody as her uncle, I understand. I only ask that you let me stay as her nanny. Don't send her away to a boarding school.""

I leaned forward across the desk, resting my hands flat against the mahogany. ""Sophia, look at me.""

She lifted her eyes, her lashes wet with unshed tears.

""When everyone else in this city would have abandoned that baby to save their own skin, you risked your freedom, your safety, and your life to hide her. You carried her through the snow. You cleaned floors for twelve hours a day just to buy her formula. You are the only mother she has ever known.""

I turned to Arthur. ""Draft the petition for joint legal guardianship. Sophia Marino and Dominic Valente. Equal rights, equal protection.""

Sophia stared at me in stunned silence, her lips parted, unable to comprehend the immense gift of legitimacy and security being laid before her. ""Joint... guardianship? But people will talk. The press, the syndicate families—""

""Let them talk,"" I said firmly, standing up and walking around the desk to offer her my hand. ""Let them see that whoever tries to harm Ava will have to destroy both of us first.""
