Chapter 1 - The Mark Behind Her Ear

The air in the living room turned to ice. ""The man who came on Thursday,"" Sophia whispered, her trembling hands twisting into the fabric of her faded skirt. ""He wasn't the grocery boy. He said he was from a courier service, but he didn't bring boxes. He brought an envelope, Mr. Valente. He told me that if I didn't leave the service door unlatched tonight at midnight, he would take Ava. He knew her name. He knew she was here.""

I felt the blood drain from my temples, replaced by a cold, calculating fury. My grip on the sleeping infant tightened just enough to secure her against my chest. ""Who sent him?""

""I don't know,"" Sophia choked out, fresh tears spilling down her pale cheeks. ""He only said that debts in Chicago are never forgotten, only collected with interest.""

Ava stirred against my shirt. The movement shifted her washed-out pink sleeper, pulling the collar down slightly on the left side of her neck. My gaze drifted down absentmindedly to soothe her, but my breath hitched violently in my throat.

Just behind her tiny left ear, nestled right against the hairline, was a distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark. It was pigmented a deep wine color, curved sharply at the lower tip like an antique sickle.

My heart hammered against my ribs with such raw force that I feared the child would feel it. I had seen that exact mark before. Only once, twenty-four years ago, on the neck of a newborn boy wrapped in silk blankets inside my late father’s private study—my younger brother, Gabriel. Gabriel, who had been spirited away during the bloody syndicate wars of the late nineties and presumed dead after his mother's car was dragged out of Lake Michigan.

""Where did you find this baby, Sophia?"" My voice had dropped an octave, stripped entirely of its previous mildness. It was the tone that usually preceded gunfire.

Sophia flinched back into the cushions, terror widening her eyes. ""She’s mine, Mr. Valente! I swear she’s mine—""

""Do not lie to me,"" I commanded, rising to my feet. The sheer authority in my posture pinned her to the chair. ""I know this mark. It does not belong to random bloodlines. It belongs to the Valente family. Look at me, Sophia. Tell me the truth before midnight arrives, or I will tear this city apart stone by stone to find it myself.""

Sophia began to weep openly, burying her face in her trembling hands. ""She isn’t mine by blood,"" she sobbed, her voice breaking into ragged pieces. ""Fourteen months ago, my sister Elena worked as a night nurse at St. Jude’s Memorial. A man arrived in the dead of night, bleeding out from gunshot wounds, carrying this baby. He had been shot three times in the chest. He thrust the baby into Elena’s arms and said, 'Keep her alive. If Dominic finds out she exists before he purges the council, they will slaughter her like they slaughtered her father.' The man died twenty minutes later on the trauma table.""

The room seemed to tilt beneath my polished leather shoes. Gabriel had lived. He had survived the purge all those years ago, lived under an alias, fathered a child, and died trying to bring her to safety.

""Elena brought her to me,"" Sophia continued, gasping for breath. ""Two weeks later, Elena died in what the police called a hit-and-run. I knew it wasn't an accident. I knew whoever killed the man had tracked Elena down. I took Ava, fled my apartment, took the only cleaning job I could find under a fake background check—right here, in your tower. I figured the safest place to hide a secret was inside the lion’s den, where nobody would ever dare search without your permission.""

I looked down at the tiny girl sleeping against my heart. Her small chest rose and fell in perfect rhythm, completely unaware that she was the last living link to my brother. The syndicate traitors who thought they had buried the Valente bloodline had spent months hunting her, and now, they were coming to my front door at midnight to claim her.

A grim, merciless smile formed across my lips.

""Sophia,"" I said softly, my voice dead calm. ""Pack your bags and move into the master suite down the hall. From this second onward, you are no longer a maid in this penthouse.""

May you like

She looked up in sheer bewilderment. ""Then... what am I?""

""You are the guardian of the Valente heiress,"" I replied coldly, walking toward my desk to pick up the secure landline. ""And tonight, we remind Chicago what happens to men who hunt my family.""
