Chapter 6 - The Charity Ball Ambush

Three days later, the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was bathed in the golden, glittering glow of the annual Autumn Heritage Gala.
Over four hundred high-ranking politicians, federal judges, and corporate titans filled the grand ballroom, sipping vintage champagne beneath towering crystal chandeliers.
I stood beside Massimo near the grand marble staircase, wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown with an emerald-cut diamond necklace resting against my collarbone.
Massimo looked devastatingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo, his hand never leaving the small of my back as he introduced me to governors and bank presidents.
"You look like you're about to faint," Massimo whispered near my ear, leaning down with an amused smirk.
"There are three snipers on the roof across the street, aren't there?" I muttered through a bright, rehearsed smile.
"Four," he corrected smoothly. "Two of them are mine. Breathe, Sophie. You are the most captivating woman in this room."
Before I could process the compliment that made my cheeks flush warm, the crowd parted near the grand entrance.
Salvatore Vitali strode into the ballroom, flanked by six private security guards and a sleek, gray-haired man in an expensive navy suit.
Standing beside Salvatore was Councilman Reed, the head of the city port authority and a key political ally of the Romano family.
Adriana walked behind them, dressed in a daring gold gown, her lips curved into a smug, venomous smile that sent a spike of warning through my chest.
"Massimo," Salvatore called out, his voice booming over the string quartet, drawing the immediate attention of the surrounding elite.
"What an unexpected pleasure to see you bringing your... charming companion into public society."
"Salvatore," Massimo replied, his posture straightening into that of an apex predator.
"I assume you came to deliver the deed to the rail terminals you defaulted on yesterday."
Salvatore laughed, a sharp, ugly sound that echoed off the gilded ceiling.
"Actually, Massimo, I came to introduce a formal federal audit," Salvatore announced, gesturing to Councilman Reed.
"It appears your floral supplier, Miller Floral Design, has been utilized as a primary laundering funnel for illicit port revenue over the past twenty-four months."
A collective gasp rippled through the room as reporters and socialites turned their cameras directly toward my face.
"That's a lie!" I shouted, stepping forward despite Massimo’s restraining hand.
"My accounts are audited every quarter by an independent certified public accountant!"
"Not according to the shipping manifests filed with the port authority this morning, Miss Miller," Councilman Reed stated, pulling a thick blue-backed document from his briefcase.
"Twelve container shipments of Dutch orchids were processed under your business tax ID, containing over eighteen million dollars in undeclared bearer bonds."
"Federal marshals are en route to seize your business assets as we speak."
Adriana stepped forward, her eyes glittering with triumphant malice.
May you like
"It seems your pretty little bride is going to spend her wedding night in a federal holding cell, Massimo," Adriana purred.
"Unless, of course, you surrender the southern rail lines to my father to settle the regulatory fines."
