Chapter 1 - The Trap on the Second Floor

Massimo set his water glass down with a slow, deliberate motion that made no sound against the marble console.

The steam from the master bathroom was still curling along the ceiling, but the air in the bedroom had turned freezing cold.

His dark eyes, which had looked merely annoyed a moment earlier, were now completely locked onto my face.

"Elena didn't send you upstairs to clean your dress, Sophie," Massimo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register.

"She sent you up here so my grandmother would open that door at twelve-seventeen."

I gripped the strap of my soaked handbag, my pulse hammering violently behind my temples.

"Why would a housekeeper care whether your grandmother thinks you have a girlfriend?" I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts.

"Because Elena isn't a housekeeper," Massimo answered coldly.

"She is the niece of Salvatore Vitali. Adriana's father."

My breath hitched in my throat as the pieces collided in my mind with terrifying speed.

Twenty minutes ago, I was in the downstairs service kitchen arranging midnight centerpieces for the Romano anniversary gala when a server bumped into me, spilling a pitcher of murky ice water down my bodice.

Elena had appeared out of nowhere with a sympathetic smile, handing me a linen towel and murmuring that the guest suite at the end of the east gallery had a private powder room.

She had handed me a heavy brass key, pointed down the dim corridor, and promised nobody used that wing during private parties.

"They set you up," I whispered, the realization hitting me like ice water.

"They set us up," Massimo corrected, reaching for a black cashmere sweater from the dressing alcove.

"Salvatore Vitali knew I was going to formally break the alliance tomorrow morning."

"His daughter has been siphoning shipping logs from our southern rail corridor for six months, selling access to rival crews out of Detroit."

"Salvatore needed leverage. He needed an unpardonable public scandal inside my own house to force my mother and the council to bind my hands."

"Then tell your mother the truth!" I shouted, gesturing wildly toward the double mahogany doors.

"Tell her Elena gave me a key! Tell her I'm just a florist who was trying to sponge dirty water off a four-hundred-dollar dress!"

Massimo pulled the sweater over his broad chest, his gaze sharpening into twin blades of steel.

"My mother doesn't care about keys, Sophie," he said, stepping toward me until his six-foot-two frame completely blocked out the lamplight.

"My mother cares about bloodlines, appearances, and the three hundred armed men waiting for my decision at dawn."

"If I tell the council that Salvatore's niece slipped an outsider into my private quarters while I was unarmed in the shower, they will view it as a catastrophic security failure."

"They would demand an immediate war before sunrise, and your flower shop would be the first thing burned to the ground to erase the witness."

I backed away two steps, my spine pressing against the edge of the dresser.

"You're threatening me?"

"I'm keeping you breathing," Massimo snarled softly, his jaw set in stone.

"When I told my family you were with me, I placed you under the Romano blood oath."

May you like

"To the entire syndicate, you are no longer a florist caught in the wrong corridor. You are my chosen bride."

"And until I dismantle Salvatore Vitali's network, you do not leave this estate."
