Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

Before I could scream his name, Vincent kicked the heavy passenger door open, using it as a moving shield against the hail of gunfire.
What followed was a terrifying display of military precision and ruthless violence. Vincent didn't cower. He moved with a terrifying speed that defied his large frame, returning fire with lethal accuracy. The crack of his heavy-caliber pistol echoed like thunderclaps through the concrete garage. Two of the Detroit shooters dropped instantly, clutching their chests before their bodies hit the oil-stained floor.
I curled tightly over Lily on the floorboards, pressing her face against my chest, singing her favorite lullaby through trembling lips while tears streamed down my face. Emma covered her head beside us, praying silently.
""Clear the flank, Marco!"" Vincent’s roar reverberated through the smoke-filled air.
From the upper ramp, the screech of tires signaled the arrival of Vincent’s primary enforcement squad. Four black SUVs descended into the garage, unleashing a wave of Moretti soldiers who completely overwhelmed the remaining Detroit mercenaries. Gunfire erupted into a chaotic, deafening symphony that lasted less than ninety seconds before abrupt, eerie silence fell over the garage.
Only the groans of wounded men and the hissing of punctured radiators remained.
""Marcus,"" Vincent’s voice was low, terrifying, and merciless.
I peeked over the edge of the leather seat. Marcus Vance was on his knees against a concrete pillar, his rifle discarded ten feet away, clutching a shattered shoulder. Vincent stood over him, towering like an avenging demon, his gun pointed directly between Marcus’s eyes.
""You broke the code, Marcus,"" Vincent said, his voice entirely devoid of human emotion. ""You targeted my wife. You targeted my four-year-old child.""
Marcus spat blood onto the floor, glaring up with manic defiance. ""You destroyed my brother! You slaughtered our bloodline! I wanted you to feel what it's like to watch your world burn!""
""My world didn't burn,"" Vincent said coldly, his finger tightening on the trigger. ""It just came home.""
A single, suppressed gunshot echoed through the garage. Marcus Vance collapsed onto the concrete, lifeless.
Vincent lowered his weapon, clicking the safety on. He didn't look at the carnage around him. He turned instantly and walked back toward our shattered vehicle. As he approached, I saw that the red stain on his shoulder had grown significantly, soaking down his arm.
He reached into the back of the car, extending his uninjured arm. ""Claire. It’s over. It’s finally over.""
I looked at his blood-stained hands, then up into his eyes. There was no arrogance in his gaze. Only a desperate, raw plea for forgiveness. I lifted Lily into my arms, keeping her face turned away from the carnage, and stepped out of the vehicle.
Vincent reached forward, his large, trembling hand gently wrapping around Lily’s small back, pulling both of us into his chest. He buried his face in my hair, his body shaking with a profound, bone-deep relief.
""I have you,"" he whispered against my ear, his voice cracking with tears. ""I have you both. I’m never letting you go again.""

Sirens wailed in the distance as the Chicago police, fully managed by Moretti liaisons, began sealing off the perimeter. For the first time in five years, the suffocating shadow of the past had truly lifted. But as Vincent’s knees buckled slightly from blood loss, I grabbed his waist, holding him upright against me.
""Hold on, Vincent,"" I commanded, tears spilling over my cheeks. ""You don't get to die after just finding us. Hold on.""
