Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Pawn

The silence that followed his statement was so heavy it felt suffocating. The hallway seemed to drop ten degrees. I stared at him, searching his dark eyes for the familiar deception, but all I found was an abyss of exhaustion and old grief.
""What did you just say?"" I managed to ask, my fingers tightening against the wooden doorframe.
Vincent glanced sideways at the two security guards standing stiffly down the corridor. ""Let me inside, Claire. I’m not asking as the head of the Moretti family. I’m asking as a man who hasn't slept a full night since the day you left.""
I hesitated, my survival instincts screaming at me to slam the door. But curiosity—a deep, burning need for closure that had gnawed at my soul for five agonizing years—won. I stepped aside, leaving the door slightly ajar.
Vincent stepped into the suite. He moved with that same predatory grace, but his eyes immediately drifted toward the closed bedroom door where Lily slept. A soft, reverent look crossed his face before he turned toward the balcony windows, running a hand through his hair.
""Elena wasn't just a waitress, Claire,"" he began, his voice rough and low. ""Her real name was Elena Vance. She was the younger sister of Julian Vance.""
My blood ran cold. Julian Vance was the ruthless leader of the Detroit syndicate—the Morettis’ bloodiest rivals who had waged a three-year turf war that nearly claimed Vincent’s life early in our marriage. ""Julian's sister? You were sleeping with the sister of your greatest enemy?""
""I never touched her!"" Vincent snapped, spinning around with a sudden, fierce intensity that made me jump. His eyes burned with an almost desperate hunger for me to believe him. ""I swear on my father’s grave, Claire, I never laid a single finger on that woman! I never kissed her, I never slept with her, and I never loved her!""
""You sat in that car and told me to my face that you loved her!"" I shouted, the fury of five years finally erupting from my chest. Tears pricked my eyes, hot and humiliating. ""You watched me pack my life into three suitcases! You let me walk out of that house alone!""
""Because Julian Vance had placed a sniper on our bedroom window!"" Vincent’s roar shook the quiet suite.
He closed the distance between us in two strides, gripping my shoulders. His touch burned through my silk blouse, electric and terrifying. His breath was ragged against my skin.
""Julian found out where I kept my heart,"" Vincent confessed, his voice breaking into raw splinters. ""He knew that if he hit my warehouses, my casinos, or my docks, I would rebuild. But he discovered that my only weakness—the only thing on this earth that could bring me to my knees—was you. He sent Elena to infiltrate my perimeter. When I caught her, she confessed that Julian had planted high-grade explosives under the floorboards of our home, wired to detonate if I attempted to move you or retaliate.""
I froze, staring at him in utter shock.
""The only way Julian agreed to spare your life was if I dismantled the Moretti alliance and showed complete weakness,"" Vincent explained, a lone tear escaping his eye and tracing a path through the stubble on his cheek. ""He wanted to humiliate me. He demanded that I abandon my high-profile, glamorous wife for his sister, publicly degrading the Moretti name. And more importantly, I knew that if you stayed by my side, Julian’s assassins would have put a bullet through your head before the month ended.""
""So... you lied to me?"" I whispered, my world tilting dangerously on its axis. ""You threw away our marriage to save my life?""
May you like
""I chose to let you hate me, Claire, because your hatred meant you were alive,"" Vincent choked out, his thumb gently brushing against my cheek, catching a tear I hadn't realized had fallen. ""I spent two years hunting Julian Vance down. I wiped his entire syndicate off the map. Elena was caught in the crossfire during the final raid in Detroit. When the smoke cleared and the war was finally won, I went to find you. But you had vanished completely. No bank activity, no film contracts, nothing. I thought I had saved your life only to lose your soul forever.""
He dropped his forehead against mine, his chest heaving. ""And then today, at that airport... a little girl ran into my arms. And she had your smile, Claire. My blood, and your heart.""
