Chapter 10 - Coming Home

Six months later.

The crisp spring breeze swept across the rolling green hills of the Champlain Valley in Vermont, carrying the sweet fragrance of blooming apple blossoms. The white picket fences and restored wooden farmhouse looked like a painting of pastoral tranquility, worlds away from the cold concrete and blood-stained alleys of Chicago.

On the wide back porch, a set of wind chimes sang softly in the wind.

Down in the orchard, the sound of joyous, unrestrained giggles filled the afternoon air.

Vincent was running through the rows of blooming apple trees, dressed in a simple flannel shirt, worn denim jeans, and work boots—a far cry from the lethal, tailored warlord of the Midwest. Lily was riding high on his broad shoulders, her tiny hands tangled in his dark hair, squealing with absolute delight as he pretended to be an airplane banking between the tree branches.

""Faster, Daddy! Fly higher!"" Lily shouted, her arms outstretched like wings.

Daddy.

The first time she had called him that, three months ago when he helped build her wooden treehouse, the former king of Chicago had broken down in tears right in the middle of the hardware store. He had spent every single day earning that title, never missing a bedtime story, learning how to braid her unruly raven curls, and patiently tasting her imaginary tea party concoctions.

I stood on the porch, leaning against the wooden railing, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade. A gentle smile touched my lips as I watched them.

The scars of five years ago hadn't vanished overnight. Forgiveness wasn't a sudden light switch; it was a slow, deliberate dawn. But every day that Vincent spent listening to my fears, respecting my boundaries, and prioritizing our daughter’s happiness over his own pride, the ice around my heart had melted a little more. He had kept his word. He had completely walked away from the underworld, leaving the violence and blood behind to become the man I had fallen in love with when we were just broke dreamers in a rundown studio apartment.

""Incoming landing!"" Vincent called out, jogging up the porch steps with Lily laughing hysterically on his shoulders. He gently lifted her down onto the wooden deck, where she immediately dashed inside to show Emma the new wildflower she had picked.

Vincent stood there, slightly out of breath, a light sheen of sweat on his brow, his dark eyes sparkling with a radiant, peaceful light I had never seen during our years in Chicago.

""She’s getting faster,"" he chuckled, wiping his forehead with the back of his forearm. ""I think she gets her speed from you.""

""She definitely gets her stubbornness from you,"" I teased, handing him a glass of lemonade.

""I won't argue with that,"" he smiled, taking a long sip before placing the glass down on the porch table.

He stepped closer to me, pausing just an inch away, his eyes asking for permission. When I didn't step back, his hands gently found my waist. His touch was warm, protective, and familiar, sending a delicious shiver down my spine.

""What are you thinking about, Claire?"" he murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to my eyes.

""I was thinking about the airport,"" I admitted softly. ""About how terrified I was when she ran into your arms. I thought my whole world was about to be destroyed all over again.""

""And now?"" he asked, his voice dropping to a tender, hopeful whisper.

I reached up, my fingers tracing the strong line of his jaw, feeling the familiar warmth of his skin. The ghost of the broken girl in the diner parking lot was finally gone, replaced by a woman who had fought for her family and won.

""And now I think that sometimes, you have to lose everything to realize what was truly worth fighting for,"" I whispered.

Vincent smiled, a look of profound, overwhelming devotion washing over his handsome face. He leaned down slowly, closing the remaining distance between us, and pressed his lips against mine.

The kiss was sweet, deep, and filled with the promise of a hundred quiet tomorrows. It was the taste of redemption, of battles fought and laid to rest, and of a love that had survived betrayal, separation, and war.

From inside the house, Lily’s laughter echoed through the open screen door, bright and beautiful. Vincent broke the kiss, resting his forehead against mine as we looked out over the blooming orchard together.

Twelve years of love, five years of heartbreak, and a lifetime of peace ahead.

We were finally home."
