Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

Vincent stared at Noah, completely stunned by a young man who had just casually rejected a multi-million-dollar fortune without blinking.
"Noah, this isn't dirty money," Vincent argued gently. "The maritime division was fully legitimized twelve years ago. It’s clean, honest commerce."
"It may be clean on paper, Mr. Moretti," Noah replied, "but it carries the weight of a life my mother and I never chose."
"If you truly want to give me something, sign a five-million-dollar endowment for the Harvard underprivileged STEM scholarship fund."
"Let other kids whose mothers work seventy hours a week get a seat in the lecture hall."
Vincent smiled through his tears, a genuine, radiant look of pride lighting up his weathered face.
"Done," Vincent said instantly, pulling out his gold pen and signing the endowment rider on the spot.
"Consider it funded before morning."
He turned to me, his dark eyes softening into an expression of desperate reverence.
"Claire... what can I do for you? Please. Tell me what you need to never worry about another bill again."
I walked over to the dining table, picking up the hot teapot and pouring a fresh cup for him.
"I don't need your money, Vincent," I said softly, setting the ceramic mug in front of him.
"I survived eighteen years without your help. But if you want to be a father to Noah, you will follow his rules."
"No private security following him to campus. No press conferences. No attempts to buy his affection."
"You will earn his respect as an ordinary man, or you will not see him at all."
Vincent took the mug with trembling hands, nodding with fervent, grateful intensity.
"I agree. To every single word."
Before we could speak further, Dominic burst through the apartment door without knocking, his gun drawn, his face pale with dread.
"Boss! We have a code red!" Dominic shouted, scanning the hallway behind him.
"What happened, Dominic?" Vincent demanded, immediately rising to his feet, his lethal instincts returning in a heartbeat.
"Sophia’s brother, Marcus Reynolds," Dominic reported rapidly.
"He just broke into the Chicago central terminal with six armed mercenaries from the southern docks!"
"They know about the disinheritance, Vincent. Marcus is holding the terminal managers hostage, demanding the bearer bonds from the master vault!"
Noah stood up instantly, his eyes darting to his laptop screen.
"The Chicago central terminal operates on the automated pneumatic routing system, right?" Noah asked suddenly.
Vincent and Dominic both looked at the eighteen-year-old in surprise.
"Yes," Vincent said. "How do you know that?"
"I wrote a paper on their efficiency bottlenecks two weeks ago," Noah said, pulling his keyboard forward.

"If they're in the central vault, they've isolated themselves in the lowest sub-level."
"If I access the municipal port overrides through the university research network, I can seal the pneumatic blast doors from this desk in ninety seconds."
