Chapter 3 - The Broken Ledger

We walked out of the auditorium into the crisp autumn breeze of Cambridge, heading straight toward the subway station.

Noah remained quiet for three blocks, his sharp mind analyzing every word, every glance, and every tense beat from the rotunda.

As we stepped onto the train platform, he turned to face me under the buzzing fluorescent lights.

"He's my father, isn't he, Mom?" Noah asked quietly.

His voice was calm, carrying no anger, only the profound, analytical need for truth that had always defined his brilliance.

I looked at my son, the boy I had scrubbed office floors and balanced ledgers late into the night to protect.

"Yes, Noah," I answered softly, tears finally stinging my eyes. "His name is Vincent Moretti."

"The logistics billionaire from Chicago," Noah deduced immediately, having read every economic journal published in the country.

"The man who owns Moretti Maritime and the Midwestern terminals."

"He wasn't dead, was he?"

"To me, he was," I confessed, wrapping both hands around his warm fingers.

"He built another family behind my back while we were married. When I found out Sophia was pregnant with Ethan, I walked away."

"I refused to let you grow up in the shadows of an underworld empire, begging for scraps of attention from a man who had already chosen another boy."

Noah looked at me for a long moment, then stepped forward and wrapped his arms around me in a warm, crushing embrace.

"You gave me everything, Mom," he whispered into my hair. "I never needed another father. I had you."

Meanwhile, back at the Four Seasons in Boston, the presidential suite was on the verge of total destruction.

Vincent slammed his crystal tumbler against the marble fireplace, sending amber bourbon and shattered glass raining across the hearth.

"Dominic!" Vincent roared at his head of security, who stood by the grand French doors with his head bowed.

"Where did the monthly checks go?!"

Dominic flinched, pulling an encrypted tablet from his suit jacket with trembling hands.

"Boss, the financial orders were executed on the first of every month for eighteen years," Dominic reported cautiously.

"Ten thousand dollars a month, wired into the offshore account designated in Mrs. Moretti's divorce settlement file."

"She didn't get a single dollar!" Vincent bellowed, grabbing Dominic by his lapels and lifting him an inch off the carpet.

"She was wearing a five-year-old coat! Her hands are calloused from working! My son was speaking about studying by candlelight when the power got cut!"

"Where did the money go, Dominic?!"

Dominic swallowed hard, his eyes flicking nervously toward the master bedroom where Sophia was pacing frantically.

"The account routing numbers were modified fourteen days after the divorce was certified, boss," Dominic whispered.

"The beneficiary was changed from Claire Bennett to a shell corporation registered in Wilmington, Delaware."

Vincent let go of Dominic's jacket, stepping back as a cold, terrifying clarity settled over his features.

"Whose shell corporation, Dominic?" Vincent asked, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

Dominic didn't answer with words; he simply rotated the tablet, displaying the corporate registration document.

The sole managing director and signatory of the account was Sophia Reynolds Moretti.
