Chapter 6 - The Confession in Crystal

The word son echoed off the vaulted ceiling like a bomb detonation. Eleanor flinched as if struck across the face, her knuckles turning white as she clutched her diamond choker.
"A son?" Senator Bradley whispered, looking at Eleanor in utter disbelief. "Eleanor, you told the charitable board last month that the Callahan lineage had ended with the divorce."
"She lied, Senator," I announced, turning to address the entire ballroom, my voice ringing clear and steady above the terrified silence. "My ex-wife, Maren Callahan, gave birth to my legitimate son and heir six days ago in an Alexandria hospital. While my mother was planning this lavish holiday gala, my child was sleeping in a nursery paid for by his mother pawning her wedding gifts."
Eleanor took a ragged breath, her chest heaving against her tight velvet bodice. She looked around the room, seeing the disgust, horror, and judgment in the eyes of the very people whose social approval she had spent forty years cultivating.
"She planned it!" Eleanor screamed, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at me. "Maren knew that child would tie your fortune to her forever! She trapped you, Everett! I paid the investigators to trace her! I had Carter seal the trust so she couldn't take half of Callahan Global!"
"Maren never asked for half of Callahan Global, Mother," I said, pulling out a second document. "This is the original settlement agreement Maren submitted to mediation in June. She waived all claims to equity, stock options, and executive compensation. She asked for fifty thousand dollars in moving expenses and child support based on statutory guidelines."
The silence in the room was absolute. Even Carter Hayes took two steps backward, physically distancing himself from the woman who had just admitted to a felony conspiracy in front of three hundred witnesses.
"You took her agreement and shredded it," I continued, feeling no pity for the broken woman trembling before the fire. "You replaced it with a forged surrender of parental rights, bribed an administrative clerk in my IT department to purge my communications, and told me she had walked away with a lover."

"Everett, I am your mother!" Eleanor wept, tears finally breaking through her heavy foundation, ruining the pristine mask she wore for the world. "Everything I did was for you! Who stood by you when the board tried to oust you in 2022?! Who secured the venture debt from Zurich?! I sacrificed my entire life for your name!"
"You sacrificed my family for your ego," I answered, my voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute finality. "And tonight, your name is removed from the company."
