Chapter 5 - The Mask Slips

Eleanor’s hands remained frozen in mid-air for half a second before she gracefully lowered them, letting out a soft, melodic laugh that sounded entirely natural to the senators standing nearby.

"Everett, sweetheart, you've clearly had a stressful day at the office," she said, stepping forward to smooth the lapel of my jacket. "Let's get you a glass of wine, and we can discuss the business schedule tomorrow morning."

I knocked her hand away with a sharp, dismissive flick of my wrist.

A collective gasp echoed across the surrounding tables. Carter Hayes set his crystal glass down onto a passing waiter's silver tray with a sharp clink, his eyes narrowing behind gold-rimmed spectacles.

"Everett," Carter intervened, his tone authoritative and firm. "You are embarrassing your mother in front of our primary institutional investors. Whatever personal grievance you have—"

"Shut your mouth, Carter," I said without looking at him, my eyes burning directly into my mother’s pale face. "You speak when I tell you to speak, or I will have federal marshals escort you out of this house in zip-ties before midnight."

Carter went rigid, the color draining rapidly from his cheeks.

Eleanor’s smile finally vanished, the warm maternal facade peeling away to reveal the cold, calculating matriarch underneath. Her gray eyes hardened into chips of winter ice.

"Lower your voice, Everett," Eleanor hissed, her words barely a whisper, yet dripping with venom. "You do not dictate terms in this house. I built the foundation you stand on."

"You didn't build a foundation, Mother," I countered, pulling the manila folder from inside my suit jacket. "You built a prison of fraud and perjury."

I opened the folder and dropped the contents onto the glass table between the senators. The medical report from Sibley Memorial fluttered across the centerpiece, landing directly in front of the French ambassador.

"Did you think I would never find out?" I asked, taking one slow, deliberate step forward, crowding her against the marble hearth. "Did you think you could forge a medical clinic's signature, claim my wife had an abortion, and file a fraudulent divorce decree with the D.C. Superior Court without facing a criminal indictment?"

The ballroom erupted into frantic, horrified murmurs. Guests began whispering behind their programs, several diplomats discreetly stepping back toward the coat check.

"Everett, that woman was poisoning your ambition!" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic control finally shattering into shrill desperation. "She was dragging you into domestic mediocrity! She wanted you home for dinner while the tech sector was consolidating! I did what had to be done to protect your legacy!"

"My legacy?" I let out a sound that was half laugh, half snarl. "You stole my son."
