Chapter 10 - The Christmas We Kept

One year after the night the storm raged outside the Alexandria townhouse, Christmas Eve arrived with a gentle, silent snowfall that dusted the brick chimneys and gas lanterns of Old Town in pure white velvet.

The living room of our historic home was alive with the rich, comforting aromas of roasted prime rib, spiced apple cider, and fresh pine.

A towering twelve-foot Christmas tree stood beside the grand brick fireplace, adorned with hundreds of warm white lights and handmade wooden ornaments. Underneath the lowest boughs lay dozens of wrapped presents, and hanging from the wooden mantel were three stockings: Maren, Everett, and Oliver.

Oliver, now a bold, laughing one-year-old with a mop of dark curls and mischievous brown eyes, was toddling across the thick wool rug, babbling happily as he pushed a wooden toy train toward the hearth.

Maren stood beside the dining table, arranging white winter roses in an antique crystal vase, wearing a stunning emerald silk dress that matched her eyes. She looked happy, healthy, and deeply content, her laughter ringing out across the room as Oliver squealed with delight.

I walked up behind her, sliding my arms securely around her waist, pulling her back against my chest.

She leaned into my embrace with an effortless, trusting familiarity that had been forged through months of shared devotion, resting her hands over mine where our gold wedding bands gleamed in the firelight.

"Everything is ready, my love," Maren murmured, tilting her head back against my shoulder.

"Not quite everything," I whispered, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against the warm curve of her neck.

I reached into my pocket and produced a small, hand-carved wooden ornament shaped like an anchor, engraved with today's date and a single phrase: Our True North.

Maren turned in my arms, tears of pure, unadulterated joy welling in her eyes as she took the ornament, running her fingers across the carved letters before hanging it on the center branch of the tree.

Oliver toddled over, grabbing my pant leg and pulling himself up with a triumphant giggle. "Dada!"

I scooped our son into my arms, holding him close against my heart while wrapping my free arm around my wife, completing the circle that no lie, no lawyer, and no shadow could ever break again.

We had survived the fire of betrayal, dismantled the fortress of pride, and built an enduring sanctuary of truth upon the honest ground of love.

Outside the tall leaded glass windows, the snow fell peacefully over the sleeping capital, but inside our home, the hearth burned bright, warm, and everlasting.
