Chapter 9 - The Trial by Fire

Laurel’s voice caught in her throat. ""Maddox...""

""I knew if I asked you properly, you'd say no,"" Maddox said, a self-deprecating smile touching the corner of his lips. ""I’m Maddox Bellanti. My hands are dirty, my reputation is terrifying, and mothers in Providence warn their daughters to stay away from men like me. You deserved someone clean. Someone who hadn't spent his life swimming with sharks.""

""You arrogant idiot,"" Laurel whispered, a tear escaping her eye and tracing down her cheek.

Maddox froze, startled. ""What?""

""You think you’re the only one who dragged out those negotiations?"" she demanded, stepping so close her chest brushed against his shirt. ""Do you have any idea how easy those property deeds actually were? I could have resolved your waterfront zoning issues in three days! But I spent three weeks on every single paragraph because every time I left your tower, my entire life felt painfully boring!""

Maddox stared at her, completely dumbfounded. The most feared man on the East Coast looked as stunned as a schoolboy. ""You... dragged them out?""

""I argued with you about coffee because my hands trembled every time you set the cup on my desk!"" Laurel laughed through her tears, wiping her face. ""And when I stood in that bathroom at the gala, practicing 'I'm not marrying you,' I wasn't trying to convince you, Maddox. I was trying to convince myself!""

For two heartbeats, the world stopped spinning.

Then Maddox reached out, his large, calloused hand cupping the side of her face, his thumb gently catching the tear on her cheek. His touch was electric, tender in a way that defied every rumor ever whispered about him in the halls of power.

""Laurel,"" he breathed.

""I spent years looking at paper, Maddox,"" she whispered, leaning into his palm. ""Paper doesn't lie, but it doesn't love, either. It’s just ink. What happened between us in boardrooms, on the docks, and in this house... that wasn't a forgery.""

Maddox didn't wait another second. He pulled her into his arms, his mouth capturing hers in a fierce, breathless kiss that obliterated every doubt, every lie, and every shadow that had haunted them. Laurel wrapped her arms around his neck, sinking into his strength, kissing him back with a passion that had been simmering beneath the surface for eight long months.

When they finally broke apart, both of them were breathless. Maddox kept his forehead pressed against hers, his hands resting possessively on her waist.

""So,"" Maddox whispered, a wicked, genuine smile lighting up his entire face, ""what happens to the annulment papers?""

Laurel glanced over at the desk, where the pristine legal documents lay waiting. She reached behind her, picked up the petition, and without breaking eye contact with him, tore the sheets cleanly in half.

She tossed the scraps into the roaring fireplace, watching them curl into ash.

""That filing was invalid anyway,"" Laurel said with professional authority. ""The venue was improper, the notary was fraudulent, and the groom didn't even get down on one knee.""

Maddox chuckled—a rich, deep sound that echoed through the sunlit suite. ""We can fix that right now.""
