Chapter 1 - The Devil's Ink

The ballroom around Laurel turned into an eerie hum of distant violins and muffled gasps, but the paper in her hands felt heavier than granite. The final line of the official certificate burned against her retinas. Beneath the signatures of the officiant and the witnesses lay an addendum stamped by the Providence County Probate Clerk: ""Recorded pursuant to Testamentary Trust Instrument No. 884-B.""

Her breath hitched so sharply that Maddox Bellanti reached out a hand, instinctively closing the gap between them before catching himself. He didn't touch her, but his shadow enveloped her trembling frame. ""Laurel, talk to me. What did you see?""

""My grandfather's irrevocable trust,"" Laurel whispered, her voice barely louder than the brush of silk. ""The waterfront parcel on Pier 14. The one my family lost twenty years ago. The deed had a survivorship clause: title could only vest in a Whitaker descendant who entered into a legal covenant with the lienholder’s primary heir before her thirtieth birthday.""

Maddox’s jaw hardened, his eyes narrowing into slits. ""My father held that lien. And you turned thirty three weeks ago.""

""Someone didn't just play a prank, Maddox,"" Laurel said, her professional instincts kicking into overdrive, pushing back the hysteria. ""Someone filed a legally binding certificate to trigger the release of that title before the deadline expired. Under Rhode Island estate law, if this marriage is recognized, forty million dollars of prime commercial real estate transfers directly into an offshore blind trust.""

A heavy silence fell between them. Across the room, patrons pretended to sip champagne, but dozens of eyes remained glued to the city's fiercest waterfront mogul and the blonde title examiner who had just publicly humiliated him. Maddox stepped closer, leaning down so his mouth was an inch from her ear. ""We are walking out of here. Right now. You make a scene, and whoever filed this document gets forty-eight hours to liquidate the accounts before our lawyers can freeze them.""

Laurel wanted to refuse. She wanted to throw the transparent evidence sleeve right into his handsome, scarred face and walk home through the cold November slush. But as a forensic examiner, she knew the terrifying power of government filings. A forged marriage certificate wasn't just an awkward scandal; it was grand larceny, identity theft, and corporate espionage wrapped in a pristine gold seal.

""I need my coat,"" she muttered stiffly.

""Elise already retrieved it,"" Maddox replied quietly, nodding toward the grand archway where his younger sister stood holding Laurel’s wool trench coat, her expression grim.

As they moved toward the foyer, the whispers parted like the sea before them. Maddox kept his hand lightly hovering behind Laurel’s waist, never quite making contact, yet shielding her from the predatory lenses of society bloggers snapping pictures near the coat check.

Outside, the Providence winter air hit Laurel like an ice bucket, shocking her lungs and clearing the fog of panic. A black armored SUV purred against the curb, exhaust swirling into the lamplight. A driver opened the door instantly.

""Where are you taking me?"" Laurel demanded, stopping on the marble steps.

""To my primary office,"" Maddox said, his voice dropping into that calm, terrifying timbre that commanded boardrooms and docks alike. ""My chief legal counsel is waiting. My digital forensic investigator has spent the last six hours tracking the IP address that submitted the pre-licensing application to the vital records bureau. If you want your life back, Whitaker, you get into the car.""

She glared at him. ""And what if I don't trust you?""

May you like

Maddox stared down at her, the scar on his eyebrow catching the streetlamp's glow. ""If I wanted to trap you into a marriage, Laurel, I wouldn't use forged paperwork in a county clerk's archive. I’d do it in broad daylight, on bended knee, until you said yes of your own free will. Now get inside before you freeze.""

Swallowing her pride, Laurel ducked into the warm leather interior. The heavy door thudded shut, sealing them off from the city, and the SUV surged forward into the dark, rain-slicked streets.
