Chapter 5 - A Scent of Betrayal

By noon the following day, the media storm had exploded across the eastern seaboard. A carefully staged photo outside the Providence Registry of Deeds showed Maddox and Laurel walking arm-in-arm, presenting their unified ownership documentation for Pier 14. Maddox had played his role with terrifying authenticity, casually placing an arm around her shoulders while deflecting reporters' shouted questions with tight, enigmatic smiles.

Now, back in the sanctuary of his corporate boardroom, the real war began.

""Look at the witness signatures on the original filing,"" Laurel said, her sleeves rolled up to her elbows as she leaned over a high-resolution optical scanner. She had spent the last four hours examining the digital microscopic scans of the ink density.

Maddox stood beside her, sipping black coffee, his eyes glued to her precise movements. ""What does your red pen say, examiner?""

""The first witness signature belongs to a fictitious name—'Elena Rostova.' The pen pressure is uniform, indicative of an autopen or a robotic plotter. But the second witness..."" Laurel zoomed in on the pixelated stroke of a looping 'C'. ""This was hand-drawn. The ink exhibits characteristic hesitations at the apex of the letter, meaning the person was nervous or elderly.""

""Can you match it to our corporate database?"" Maddox asked, gesturing to the technician.

""I don't need a database,"" Laurel said, her pulse quickening as cold dread washed over her. ""I know this hand. I’ve seen it on every family Christmas card since I was seven years old.""

Maddox set his cup down with deliberate care. ""Who?""

""My uncle,"" she choked out. ""Charles Whitaker.""

Silence descended on the room like a suffocating shroud.

""Charles went bankrupt three years ago during the Atlantic offshore drilling collapse,"" Laurel whispered, piecing the puzzle together in real-time. ""He blamed my father for not bailing him out with trust funds. He always believed Pier 14 belonged to his side of the family.""

""Charles couldn't have pulled this off alone,"" Marcus Vance noted from the corner of the table. ""He lacks the financial infrastructure to hire overseas VPN encryptors or liquidate offshore shell corporations.""

""He didn't do it alone,"" a new voice rang out from the doorway.

They all turned. Standing in the entrance was Elise Bellanti, Maddox’s younger sister, her designer heels clicking sharply on the polished wood. Her face was pale, devoid of its usual playful arrogance. In her hands, she held a thick leather-bound folder.

""Elise?"" Maddox asked, his posture instantly shifting into combat readiness. ""What is that?""

""I found this in Uncle Salvatore’s private safe at the marina office,"" Elise said, her voice shaking slightly as she handed the folder to Maddox. ""Salvatore met with Charles Whitaker four times over the past two months. Salvatore guaranteed Charles forty percent of the logistics proceeds if they could force Pier 14 into probate auction.""

Laurel felt the air leave her chest. Salvatore Bellanti was Maddox’s estranged uncle—the patriarch of the old-school Bellanti faction that Maddox had ruthlessly ousted five years ago to legitimize the family businesses.

""Salvatore wanted his harbor back,"" Maddox said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. The veins in his neck stood out as he read the handwritten correspondence. ""He used your uncle's desperation and your grandfather's trust to manufacture a legal coup.""

""And Finch?"" Laurel asked, horrified. ""The notary who died?""

""Finch was Salvatore's old bookkeeper from the eighties,"" Maddox growled. ""When Finch panicked about the federal penalties of forging a state vital record, Salvatore silenced him.""

Suddenly, Maddox’s desk phone chimed with an urgent red light. Marcus picked it up, listened for five seconds, and turned white.

""Maddox,"" Marcus said, his voice taut. ""Your uncle Salvatore just filed an ex-parte emergency injunction in federal district court. He claims you and Laurel are engaged in probate fraud against Charles Whitaker. He's demanding the immediate arrest of the signatories and the physical seizure of the original trust documents currently held at your waterfront vault.""
