Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Ledger

The phone slipped from Natalie’s numb fingers, but Alessandro caught it in midair before it hit the hardwood floor.

He pressed the speaker button, his jaw tightening into a lethal line of pure granite.

"Who authorized this call?" Alessandro demanded into the microphone.

A sharp, mocking chuckle echoed from the tiny speaker.

"Vitale. How quaint that you're answering the girl's cell phone. Tell her she has forty minutes before we test her brother's anatomical reflexes."

The line went dead with a harsh click.

Natalie felt the room tilt around her.

Her knees buckled, but strong, warm hands caught her by the elbows, lifting her effortlessly back onto her feet.

"Michael," she gasped, tears burning in her eyes as panic clawed at her chest. "They have my brother, Alessandro! They're going to kill him!"

"They won't touch him," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into an octave of absolute, terrifying certainty.

"Look at me, Natalie."

She forced herself to meet his dark, unblinking gaze.

There was no fear in his eyes, only the cold, calculating focus of a man who had survived a hundred ambushes.

"I swore to protect the scholars under my foundation," Alessandro said, his hand lingering gently on her shoulder.

"And Michael Collins is under my personal protection. No one harms my people."

Marco burst through the service door, holding a dripping silver flash drive wrapped in a handkerchief.

"Boss. Richard talked. The Morettis have a staging crew at the navy yard warehouses. They were planning to leverage the boy to force you into signing over the northern container terminals."

"Did they breach our perimeter?" Alessandro asked, his voice dead and calm.

"No, sir. They intercepted Michael's campus shuttle twenty minutes after he left the library."

Alessandro turned toward the antique secretary desk against the far wall.

He pulled an antique brass key from his waistcoat pocket, unlocked a concealed interior drawer, and removed a heavy, leather-bound volume embossed with the Vitale family crest.

"What is that?" Natalie asked, wiping a stray tear from her cheek.

"The genuine transfer authorizations," Alessandro replied, opening the pages to reveal twenty distinct watermarked sheets, each bearing an identical relief pattern of a twelve-petaled lily.

"These certificates control thirty percent of the private bond holdings along the Eastern seaboard. The Morettis don't just want nine million dollars. They want the signature authority to liquidate the entire shipping port."

Natalie looked down at the original pages under the lamp light.

"The counterfeit Richard brought was missing the micro-text along the inner stem," she said, her professional instinct taking over despite the terror gnawing at her stomach.

"The ink on the counterfeit was carbon-based. Under infrared light, it glows green. Genuine Vitale bank ink contains iron gall; it absorbs light completely."

Alessandro looked up at her, a glimmer of genuine admiration cutting through the darkness in his eyes.

"You can spot the difference under a field lamp?" he asked.

"I can spot the difference from six feet away in the dark," Natalie answered fiercely, her voice steadying as maternal resolve pushed back the panic.

"Then you're coming with me to Pier 14," Alessandro said, signaling to Marco.

"We are going to give the Morettis exactly what they asked for. And then we are going to bury them."
