Chapter 10 - The Embrace That Built A Home

One year later, the grand terrace of the Vitale estate in Cold Spring was transformed into a paradise of white blossoms, crystal lanterns, and autumn foliage.

Over three hundred guests filled the lawn overlooking the shimmering waters of the Hudson River: doctors, nurses, harbor workers, civic leaders, and the young scholarship students whose lives had been rebuilt by the foundation.

The string quartet played a magnificent, triumphant hymn as the afternoon sun cast long, golden rays across the stone balustrades.

Alessandro stood at the altar beneath an arch of white lilies and ivy, wearing a midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture straight, proud, and completely unburdened.

Beside him stood Michael Collins as the best man, dressed in a matching tuxedo, grinning with unrestrained, brotherly joy.

The double French doors of the mansion swung open.

Natalie stepped onto the stone terrace on the arm of the hospital dean who had mentored her father thirty years ago.

She took everyone's breath away.

Her gown was an exquisite masterpiece of vintage silk and handcrafted lace, featuring an intricate train embroidered with subtle, shimmering patterns of twelve-petaled lilies that caught every beam of sunlight as she moved.

Her dark hair fell in soft curls around her shoulders, her face glowing with radiant, serene happiness.

As she reached the altar, Alessandro stepped forward, taking her hands into his.

His grip was firm, warm, and unbreakable.

The minister spoke words of commitment, honor, and truth, but neither Natalie nor Alessandro heard anything except the steady, rhythmic beat of each other's hearts.

"I take you, Alessandro," Natalie spoke clearly, her voice carrying across the silent terrace into the autumn breeze.

"Not as a protector, and not as a titan, but as the man who taught me that an honest heart can never be conquered by the storm."

"And I take you, Natalie," Alessandro vowed, his dark eyes shining with tears he did not try to blink away.

"To honor you, to build with you, and to spend every day of my life giving you a home where you will never have to search in the dark again."

They exchanged rings—simple, elegant bands of recycled platinum forged in the harbor district.

"By the power vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared with a broad smile.

"You may kiss the bride."

Alessandro didn't wait.

He wrapped his strong arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off the stone floor, and brought his lips down to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their lives together forever.

The crowd erupted into roaring cheers, whistles, and applause that echoed across the Hudson River valley.

When their lips finally parted, Natalie rested her forehead against Alessandro’s chest, laughing with pure, unadulterated joy as confetti rained down around them.

Michael stepped up behind them, clapping Alessandro firmly on his good shoulder.

"Welcome to the family, brother," Michael beamed.

Alessandro smiled warmly at Michael, then turned his gaze back down to his wife.

He leaned close to her ear, the autumn wind rustling through her lace veil, and whispered:

"Do you remember what you said to me the first time you put your arms around me at that hotel?"

Natalie looked up into his eyes, her heart overflowing with love.

"I said: I'm so proud of you, Michael."

Alessandro laughed—a rich, genuine, unrestrained laugh that carried across the terrace and filled the sunlit afternoon with pure light.

"Well, Mrs. Vitale," Alessandro whispered, pulling her back against his chest where she belonged for the rest of their days.

"Now you can be proud of me."
