Chapter 5 - The Snake at the Balcony

Claire Whitmore stood on the second-floor gallery, wearing an elegant silk dressing gown, her manicured fingers resting on the polished mahogany railing.

Behind her, Dr. Robert Evans—the corrupt private physician who had signed the fake death certificates—stood trembling, clutching a medical transport carrier containing a sleeping infant.

Claire looked down at the foyer, her crimson lips curling into a vicious, unhinged sneer when she saw Megan standing beside me.

"Look at you, Rowan," Claire mocked, her laughter sounding shrill and hollow against the chandeliers. "The great Southern Don, crawling through the mud to drag his trash back into the parlor!"

"Hand over my daughter, Claire," I said, taking two deliberate steps up the marble stairs, my weapon locked on Dr. Evans’s chest.

"She isn't your daughter anymore!" Claire shrieked, losing her aristocratic composure completely. "I have a legal adoption certificate signed by a county magistrate in Georgia! I raised her for six months! I paid for her oxygen tanks, her private nurses, and her specialized therapy!"

"You paid for it with money you embezzled from my logistics accounts, Claire," I countered coldly. "And you paid for it while trying to murder my wife in a roadside ditch."

Megan stepped forward, walking up the first three steps of the staircase.

She didn't look at Claire with fear; she looked at her with the absolute, unyielding contempt of a mother whose child was within reach.

"You held my hand at my wedding, Claire," Megan said, her voice shaking with quiet, devastating fury. "You toasted our happiness. You called me your sister."

Claire’s eyes flared with venomous hatred. "You were a nobody from a trailer park in East Tennessee! Rowan was supposed to marry me! Our families had an alliance planned for twenty years before he picked you up at that greasy charity diner!"

She turned to Dr. Evans, snapping her fingers. "Evans, take the child through the rear terrace elevator! The helicopter is landing on the pad in five minutes!"

Evans took a panicked step toward the balcony doors, but a sharp crack echoed through the foyer.

Megan had raised my pistol, firing a single, precision round into the ceiling plaster three inches above Evans’s head.

Plaster dust rained down on the doctor's shoulders. Evans shrieked, dropping to his knees, placing the carrier gently on the Persian rug with his hands raised in the air.

"Don't shoot! I'm just a doctor! She paid me fifty thousand dollars!" Evans wailed.

Claire lunged for the carrier, but I moved with terrifying, blinding speed.

I vaulted up the remaining stairs, caught Claire by the wrist, twisted her arm behind her back, and slammed her against the gallery balustrade until her breath left her in a choked gasp.

"Touch that child again, Claire," I whispered into her ear, my voice trembling with the darkest malice of my underworld lineage, "and I will ensure your family spends the next twenty years digging ditches in an offshore penal colony."
