Chapter 1 - The Stolen Daughter

The single word echoed through the dimly lit room like a gunshot.

"Three," Mercer whispered, his eyes darting frantically toward the locked basement door. "She gave birth to triplets in an abandoned rural clinic outside Chattanooga, Rowan."

My hands closed around the investigator’s throat before my brain could process the movement. The wooden chair groaned beneath his weight as I slammed him against the concrete wall, my customized silver pistol pressing deep into his windpipe.

"Where is my daughter, Mercer?!" I roared, the rage vibrating in my chest so violently that my vision blurred with red. "Tell me where they took her, or I will feed your bones to the hounds behind my kennel!"

Mercer choked, his face turning an apocalyptic shade of purple as his fingernails clawed at my wrists.

"Claire... Claire has her!" he gasped through his crushed windpipe. "The baby girl... she was born with respiratory distress! Claire’s private doctor took her straight from the delivery table before Megan even woke from the anesthesia!"

I hurled him across the table, scattering forged photographs and fake bank ledgers onto the floor.

My breath tore through my lungs in ragged, burning gasps as I looked down at the medical intake file. Clara Bellamy. Born at 4:18 A.M. Weight: four pounds, two ounces. Hair: golden blond. Eyes: silver-gray.

The exact unmistakable silver-gray of my mother’s bloodline.

"Claire told Megan the girl died of lung collapse," Mercer sobbed, clutching his bruised throat on the floor. "She showed her a fake death certificate and an empty incubator! She threatened to have Noah and Lucas suffocated in their cribs if Megan ever stepped foot inside Nashville city limits!"

A sickening wave of nausea hit me so intensely that I had to steady myself against the steel filing cabinet.

A year ago, I had called myself a mafia sovereign. I controlled distribution networks across five states, moved millions with a single nod, and made federal prosecutors shudder.

Yet under my own roof, inside my own bedroom, Claire Whitmore and my traitorous lieutenant Gideon Pike had made a total fool out of me.

I had thrown my pregnant wife into a winter storm, laughing while she begged on her knees for me to check the timestamps on hotel cameras.

And this afternoon, while my sons were strapped to their starving mother’s chest collecting crushed aluminum cans on the side of a highway, Claire had tossed a crumpled twenty-dollar bill into the mud and laughed.

"Where is Claire keeping Clara right now?" I asked, my voice dropping into a deadly, horrifying calm that terrified Mercer far more than my shouting.

"The private estate in Franklin," Mercer stammered, pulling a key card from his sock. "Dr. Evans is keeping her in a pressurized pediatric nursery on the top floor. Claire calls the girl her adopted niece to avoid questions from the domestic staff."

I took the key card, stepped over Mercer’s trembling body, and pulled out my satellite phone, dialing my chief of tactical operations.

"Killian," I said into the receiver.

"Boss?"

"Mobilize all thirty men from the rail depot," I ordered with chilling finality. "Full tactical armor, silenced assault carbines. Surround the Whitmore estate in Franklin. If Gideon Pike or Claire Whitmore attempts to leave the property, blow their tires and put them on their knees."

"And you, sir?"

"I am going to the highway," I answered, my heart tearing in two. "I am going to get my wife and sons."
