Chapter 8 - The Forty-Second Floor

The executive boardroom of Vanguard Logistics sat high above the Chicago skyline, surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling glass that looked out over Lake Michigan. But inside, the atmosphere was as cold and pressurized as a submarine hull.

Victoria Vance sat at the far end of the thirty-foot quartz conference table. She had already shed her ivory coat, revealing a pristine charcoal suit. In front of her sat two corporate attorneys and a stack of legal filings. The nine members of Vanguard’s board of directors were seated along the perimeter, looking anxious, checking their phones as the notification chimes signaled the escalating media firestorm outside.

""Ladies and gentlemen, the timeline is unequivocal,"" Victoria was saying, her voice projecting with crisp, theatrical authority as the boardroom doors clicked open. ""The virality of the footage has caused our prospective enterprise partners in Munich to pause contract negotiations. The company cannot afford a CEO whose personal life is an international punchline for reckless hedonism. Under Section 14-B of the operating charter, I move to immediately—""

The heavy double doors swung open, slamming against the magnetic catches with a sharp crack that silenced the room.

Colin walked in first, his posture upright, his expression an impenetrable mask of executive authority. And directly beside him, my hand firmly intertwined with his, walked me.

Every single head at the table turned in shock. Victoria’s voice died in her throat, her eyes widening for a fraction of a second before her face hardened into an icy sneer.

""Colin,"" she said smoothly, recovering her composure with terrifying speed. ""I didn't expect you to bring the source of the company's public relations catastrophe to an executive session. Mrs. Coleman, this is a closed board meeting. Security can escort you to the lobby.""

""Security isn't touching my wife,"" Colin said, his voice echoing across the quartz table with absolute finality.

He pulled out the leather executive chair at the head of the table and held it for me. I sat down, meeting Victoria’s glare without blinking. The shame that had suffocated me in the alleyway was completely gone, burned away by the cold fury of the truth. Colin remained standing beside me, placing a sleek leather briefcase on the table and snapping the brass latches open.

""Before the board entertains any motions regarding Section 14-B,"" Colin announced, turning his gaze toward the chairman, an elderly man named Arthur Pendelton, ""I believe the directors should review the complete evidentiary package concerning the events of last night.""

Victoria let out a short, dismissive laugh. ""Colin, the entire world has seen the evidence. Your wife humiliated you on camera with a total stranger. She laughed in your face while millions watched. You cannot spin high-definition reality.""

""You're right, Victoria,"" I spoke up, my voice clear, ringing out across the silent boardroom. ""You can't spin reality. But you can certainly pay three thousand dollars to stage it.""

Victoria’s smirk faltered slightly. ""Excuse me?""

Colin reached into his briefcase and produced the encrypted flash drive, tossing it across the quartz table. It slid to a halt directly in front of Arthur Pendelton.

""On that drive are the certified transaction logs from an offshore shell account registered to Vance Capital,"" Colin stated, his voice cutting through the tension like a surgical blade. ""Deposits totaling fifty thousand dollars made forty-eight hours ago to Julian Mercer—the aspiring actor on the dance floor—and two hundred thousand dollars wired directly to settle the private gambling debts of Keira Sterling.""

A collective murmur erupted along the board table. Two directors immediately leaned in toward Pendelton’s screen.

""This is absurd!"" Victoria snapped, standing up, her hands slamming against the table. ""This is a desperate fabrication designed to distract from his domestic failures! Colin is using corporate resources to cover for a wife who doesn't respect him!""

""There's more,"" Colin continued, utterly unbothered by her outburst. ""The toxicology panel Delaney took thirty minutes ago at Northwestern Memorial Hospital confirms the presence of flunitrazepam in her blood—administered through a drink served by a bartender who has already given a sworn video deposition admitting Keira Sterling paid him five hundred dollars to spike her cocktail.""

The color drained from Victoria’s face, leaving her chalk-white beneath her expensive makeup. She glanced frantically toward her two attorneys, but both men had suddenly leaned back in their chairs, closing their notebooks and visibly distancing themselves from their client.

""And finally,"" Colin added, stepping forward, his eyes boring into Victoria with lethal precision, ""we have the unedited mezzanine audio from the VIP booth.""

He pressed a button on his remote. The boardroom’s surround-sound system came to life, filling the room with the booming club bass, followed instantly by Victoria’s unmistakable, clear voice whispering into Colin’s ear:

""Watch her, Colin. Keira made sure she took the drink. When she kisses him, your voting trust belongs to me.""
