Chapter 3 - Poison in the Conservatory

The conservatory at the Drake Hotel was quiet, bathed in the filtered morning light that fell through towering arched glass windows. Potted palms and brass fixtures created an illusion of vintage serenity, entirely detached from the social media storm that was consuming my personal life outside.

I sat at a corner table near the rear fountain, my trench coat pulled tight around my neck. Every time someone glanced in my direction, my skin burned with paranoia. Did they recognize the woman from the viral clip? Did they see the reckless wife who had laughed in her husband’s face while another man’s hand gripped her waist?

At precisely 8:45 AM, the clatter of designer heels announced her arrival.

Victoria Vance walked through the arched entryway with the effortless posture of someone who owned the air she breathed. She wore an ivory cashmere coat, tailored trousers, and gold hoop earrings that caught the pale autumn sun. Her dark hair was cut into a sharp, architectural bob that framed her angular jawline. She didn't look like an exiled embezzler; she looked like a triumphant CEO returning to claim her dividends.

She pulled out the wicker chair opposite me and sat down without greeting me, signaling the waiter for an espresso with a slight flick of her index finger.

""You look tired, Delaney,"" Victoria said smoothly, folding her hands over an embossed leather handbag. ""Viral fame clearly doesn't agree with your complexion.""

""Where is Colin?"" I demanded, leaning across the table, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. ""What game are you playing, Victoria? Why were you at that club last night?""

Victoria smiled, a cold, clinical expression that made the fine hairs on my arms stand up. ""I live in Chicago again, darling. I have for three months. And as for Colin... he called me. Not the other way around.""

""That's a lie,"" I shot back, though the memory of Colin's voice in the audio text echoed sickeningly in my ears.

""Is it?"" Victoria tilted her head, watching me like an entomologist studying a pinned insect. ""Colin came to me six weeks ago because he discovered something fascinating while reviewing your family’s private trust. Did you really think your dear, departed father settled his debts before he passed? Or did you just assume the Coleman estate absorbed his half-million-dollar offshore liabilities out of pure romantic generosity?""

My breath stalled. My father had passed away two years ago from sudden cardiac arrest. Colin had handled all the probate paperwork with our family attorney, telling me repeatedly to mourn in peace while he finalized the estate details. I had never looked at the ledgers. I had trusted him blindly.

""Colin didn't tell you, did he?"" Victoria continued, her voice dipping into a malicious purr. ""He protected your delicate sensibilities. He liquidated his own private equity shares to cover your father's fraud so your mother wouldn't lose her house. And how did you repay him, Delaney? By sulking that he worked late? By letting your pathetic little influencer friend film you acting like a cheap distraction for frat boys?""

Every word felt like a physical blow against my ribcage. The suffocating distance that had grown between Colin and me over the past year—the late nights, the hollow exhaustion in his eyes, the silent dinners where he looked through me—hadn't been a lack of love. It had been the crushing weight of a secret sacrifice he had carried entirely by himself while I complained about feeling neglected.

""Why are you here, Victoria?"" I asked, tears burning behind my eyelids as the full magnitude of my self-absorption crushed down on me. ""If Colin knows everything, why are you talking to me?""

""Because Colin is a sentimental fool who still believes in redemption,"" Victoria snapped, the veneer of poise slipping just enough to reveal the predatory hunger beneath. ""He refuses to sign the asset restructuring papers that would allow me to buy back into Vanguard. He claims he won't use your family’s debt as leverage to force a divorce settlement. But you are going to solve that problem for me.""

She slid a sleek manila folder across the linen tablecloth.

""Inside is an uncontested divorce agreement and an immediate surrender of your claim to any marital assets, including Colin's shares in Vanguard. You sign it, you disappear, and your mother never finds out her late husband was a criminal who died one step ahead of a federal indictment.""

May you like

""And if I refuse?"" I asked, staring at the thick white paper.

Victoria picked up her espresso cup, taking a slow, delicate sip before meeting my eyes. ""If you refuse, the raw footage of your father’s shell corporations goes live on the same internet channels currently ripping your personal character apart. And Colin? Colin will be bankrupt by Monday morning, dragged down by your father's ghost. You broke him last night on camera, Delaney. Sign the papers, and at least let him keep what’s left of his life.""
