Chapter 6 - The Greyhound Terminal

The downtown bus terminal was a sprawling cavern of concrete, diesel exhaust, and tired travelers clutching worn luggage. The digital board overhead flashed departures: Phoenix - Gate 14 - Boarding.

I shoved my way through the crowded terminal, ignoring the annoyed glares of passengers. My expensive shoes slipped on the grimy linoleum.

""Boarding for Bus 408 to Phoenix, final call,"" a crackling voice echoed through the PA system.

I sprinted toward Gate 14. A long line of passengers was moving through the glass doors onto the dimly lit tarmac. Near the end of the line, sitting in a battered, manual wheelchair, was a little girl with blonde curls and a floral blanket over her lap.

And pushing that wheelchair was Emily.

She wore a thin, faded denim jacket, her shoulders hunched against the cold draft of the terminal doors. Her eyes were red and swollen, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail. She looked utterly exhausted, broken down by a world that constantly demanded everything from her and gave back nothing.

""Emily!"" I shouted, my voice cutting through the terminal noise.

Several people turned to look. Emily froze. When she turned and saw me running toward her, terror flashed across her face. She instinctively stepped in front of Chloe's wheelchair, her hands coming up as if expecting private security guards to tackle her.

""Mr. Whitaker?"" she whispered, backing away until the wheelchair hit the brick wall. ""Please... I didn't steal anything. I swear I didn't take a single thing from your house. Just let us leave.""

Seeing her cower before me shattered whatever remained of my ego.

Right there, on the dirty linoleum floor of the bus station, surrounded by dozens of staring strangers and the smell of cheap coffee, I dropped to both knees.

Emily gasped, stepping back. ""Mr. Whitaker... what are you doing? Get up.""

""I am not getting up until you hear what I have to say,"" I said, my voice thick with tears that I couldn't stop. ""The doctor told me everything, Emily. Zion is alive because of you. If you hadn't put him in that sink, if you hadn't sponged him down and cooled his body while his throat was closing, my baby would have died before the paramedics ever arrived.""

Emily’s lips parted, her eyes widening in disbelief. ""Zion... is he okay? Is he breathing?""

May you like

Even after I had humiliated her, cursed her, and thrown her out onto the street, her very first thought was whether my son was breathing.

""He's stable,"" I wept, bowing my head. ""He’s in the pediatric ICU. Margaret poisoned him, Emily. She was trying to murder my son for money. You saved his life, and I... I treated you like a criminal because of my own blind, arrogant stupidity.""
