Chapter 5 - The Sister's Truth

The elderly neighbor stared at me for a long moment, judging my sincerity before unhooking the chain and opening the door slightly.

""You broke more than you think, mister,"" she said bitterly. ""Emily didn't even pack a bag. She came in here sobbing, packed her little sister Chloe into a taxi, and left. Chloe has brittle bone disease. Emily worked seventy hours a week cleaning toilets and scrubbing your marble floors just to pay for Chloe's specialized wheelchair treatments.""

""Where did they go?"" I begged. ""Please. I will pay whatever it takes. I just need to apologize. I need to bring her back.""

""Keep your damn money,"" the woman snapped. ""She said she was leaving the state. Said she couldn't stay in a town where people with power can crush you just because they feel like it. She had just enough cash left to buy two Greyhound bus tickets to her aunt's house in Phoenix. The bus leaves the central terminal at nine tonight.""

I checked my watch. 8:38 PM.

The central Greyhound station was across downtown, twelve miles through evening congestion.

""Thank you,"" I gasped, sprinting back down the concrete stairwell.

I threw myself into the SUV, slamming the gas pedal to the floor. I ignored speed limits, swerving through freeway lanes, my knuckles white on the steering wheel. As the city lights blurred past, my phone buzzed through the dashboard speakers. It was Frank.

""Marcus, we got Margaret,"" Frank reported, his voice crisp. ""State troopers intercepted her vehicle near the San Bernardino border. She had a fake passport under the name Evelyn Vance, ten thousand dollars in cash, and a burner phone.""

""Did she talk?"" I asked through gritted teeth.

""Not to the troopers, but we ran the call logs on that burner phone,"" Frank said, a dark edge creeping into his voice. ""Marcus... Margaret didn't act alone. Over the last four months, she received six encrypted payments totaling three hundred thousand dollars from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.""

""Whose account?""

""The shell corporation traces back to Julian Whitaker. Your brother.""

The air went completely still inside the car. Julian. My younger brother, who had spent the last five years drowning in gambling debt, begging our father's estate for larger disbursements from the Whitaker family trust. Under the terms of our father’s will, if I died without an heir, the entire Whitaker industrial empire and its billions in family trusts defaulted entirely to Julian.

When Clara died, Zion became the sole barrier standing between Julian and the Whitaker fortune.

""Julian paid Margaret to kill my son,"" I whispered, the horror creeping over me like freezing water.

""He promised her half a million to make it look like a tragic infant accident,"" Frank confirmed. ""Margaret intentionally fed Zion the peanut paste and planned to stage it as sudden infant death syndrome while she was 'distracted' in the garden. But Emily ruined their plan. When Emily saw Zion struggling, she intervened. Margaret panicked, realizing the sink bath was keeping Zion alive long enough for an ambulance to be called, so she abandoned the plan and ran.""

I gripped the steering wheel so hard the leather groaned. ""Margaret didn't just try to kill Zion, Frank. She used my own arrogance against me. She knew I would blame Emily. She knew I was too blind to see the truth.""

""Where are you now, Marcus?""

""I’m pulling into the Greyhound station,"" I said. ""Keep Margaret locked in an interrogation cell until the FBI arrives. I have a debt to pay first.""
