Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

Even in the quiet sanctuary of Mercer Island, the real world did not vanish overnight. By Saturday morning, the fallout from the boardroom coup had exploded across the national business media.

Wall Street Journal: Prescott Steps Down in Dramatic Boardroom Purge at Meridian.

Bloomberg: Insider Fraud Scandal Rocks Tech Giant as Former COO Faces Federal Charges.

Seattle Times: Billionaire Adrian Prescott Reclaims Family, Abandons $740M Merger.

Arthur Vance arrived at the estate shortly after eleven o'clock, carrying a stack of non-disclosure settlements and federal cooperation agreements. We sat on the back terrace, drinking black coffee while watching Bennett and Chloe attempt to build a snowman out of the light dusting of flurries on the lawn, supervised by Emily and two trusted security aides.

""The federal marshals arrested Tessa at Sea-Tac airport at six this morning,"" Arthur reported, taking a sip from his steaming mug. ""She had a one-way ticket to Zurich and two million dollars in bearer bonds in her carry-on luggage. The U.S. Attorney has indicted her on six counts of corporate wire fraud, mail interception, and insider trading. She won't be seeing the outside of a federal penitentiary for at least seven years.""

I looked down at my coffee, feeling no sense of triumph, only a quiet, somber relief. ""And Mark Sterling?""

""Sterling resigned all seven of his corporate directorships this morning,"" Arthur said. ""He sold his Meridian holdings at a three-percent discount to institutional buyers to avoid litigation. The board has formally ratified your status as majority shareholder and voted unanimously to approve a comprehensive family leave package for all Meridian employees in your honor.""

I smiled faintly. ""Good. That’s at least one decent thing that came out of this nightmare.""

""Adrian,"" Arthur said, leaning forward, his eyes softening behind his gold-rimmed glasses. ""In thirty years of practicing corporate law, I have watched dozens of men destroy their families to protect their companies. I have never seen a man sacrifice an empire to protect his children. You did the right thing.""

""It didn't feel like a sacrifice, Arthur,"" I replied, watching Bennett throw a fistful of powdery snow at Emily, who shrieked with laughter and chased him around a stone planter. ""It felt like waking up from a coma.""

Later that afternoon, after Arthur had departed and the children were down for their afternoon nap, Emily joined me in the study. She carried an old, weathered cardboard box she had retrieved from her storage unit in Tacoma—a box she had kept locked away during our two years apart.

She set it on the large cherrywood desk and lifted the lid.

Inside were dozens of photographs of our time together: trips to the Oregon coast, summer nights in Lake Tahoe, spontaneous weekend road trips where we slept in the back of my old truck before Meridian had become a multibillion-dollar monster. Beneath the photos lay two baby memory books, their pages lovingly filled with handwritten notes, hospital wristbands, and tiny ink footprints.

""I kept everything,"" Emily said softly, running her fingers along the edge of the albums. ""Every milestone. Bennett's first tooth. Chloe's first word—which was 'cookie,' by the way. I wrote them down because I told myself that even if you never came back, they deserved to know that they were born out of love, not an accident.""

I opened Bennett's book, my throat tightening as I saw a photo of a tiny newborn wrapped in a blue blanket, his gray-green eyes staring blankly at a world that had almost denied him a father.

""We are going to fill a hundred more books, Em,"" I said, pulling her onto my lap in the deep leather executive chair. ""Together. Every birthday, every scraped knee, every school play.""

She rested her cheek against my chest, listening to the steady beat of my heart. ""Promise me one thing, Adrian.""

""Anything.""

""On Christmas Eve,"" I whispered, kissing the top of her head, ""I will be strictly on crayon duty."""
