Chapter 2 - Grounded in O'Hare

The Boeing 777 touched down on the tarmac at O’Hare International Airport amidst a swirling squall of lake-effect snow. Outside, the world was blanketed in a dull, freezing gray, but inside the private transit lounge behind the gate, the atmosphere was suffocatingly hot.

My personal phone had not stopped vibrating since our wheels kissed the runway. Screen notification after notification flashed across the display: Tessa Caldwell (7 missed calls), Mark Sterling - Board Chair (4 missed calls), Arthur Vance - Lead Counsel (Priority Urgent).

I ignored every single one of them.

Instead, I stood by the glass window watching Bennett press his forehead against the pane, giggling as the giant yellow de-icing trucks sprayed neon green fluid onto the wings of departing aircraft. His sister, whose name Emily had whispered to me on our descent was Chloe, was now perched securely on my forearm. It felt unnatural at first, holding a twenty-pound human being who possessed my own gray-green eyes, but within ten minutes, my body had instinctively adjusted to balance her weight. She had fallen asleep again, her tiny, warm breath puffing rhythmically against my neck.

""Adrian, you can't just ignore Tessa,"" Emily said, pacing the carpeted floor of the VIP lounge with an unread boarding pass clutched in her fingers. ""She’s the COO of a Fortune 500 company. She has entire legal firms on retainer. If you miss the four o'clock closing deadline, the Clearhaven board has a mandatory walk-away clause. The stock will plummet.""

""Let it,"" I said, not taking my eyes off Bennett. ""If Meridian loses forty percent of its market cap tomorrow morning, I will still have more money than I could spend in three lifetimes. But I lost two years of their first steps, their first words, their first Christmases. I am not trading another five minutes with them to make Wall Street happy.""

Before Emily could answer, the double doors of the private terminal suite clicked open. My head of security, Frank Alvarez, stepped through. Frank had worked for my family for nearly twelve years—an ex-Marine whose discretion was absolute. He paused momentarily when he saw me standing with a toddler nestled against my shoulder, his eyebrows lifting slightly, but his professional demeanor didn't crack.

""The Cadillac Escalade is waiting at the tarmac gate, Mr. Prescott,"" Frank said quietly, closing the door behind him. ""And you have an uninvited guest waiting in the VIP reception.""

I turned slowly, keeping Chloe steady. ""Who?""

""Ms. Caldwell took the early corporate Gulfstream out of Boeing Field three hours before your commercial flight,"" Frank replied. ""She caught wind that your phone was unresponsive upon landing. She’s in the front office with the Clearhaven signature documents and two notary publics. She says she’s not leaving until you sign.""

A dark, humorless smile touched my lips. ""She came in person. How considerate.""

""Adrian, please don't cause a scene here,"" Emily pleaded, her knuckles whitening around her purse straps. ""If she sees me... if she realizes why you didn't answer...""

""That is exactly why she is going to see you,"" I said firmly. ""Frank, take Emily, Bennett, and Chloe through the service corridor straight into the secondary vehicle. Have them driven to the Peninsula Hotel penthouse under your personal alias. Post two armed guards outside their door, order whatever the children want from room service, and don't let anyone onto that floor without my biometric clearance.""

Frank nodded once. ""Understood, boss. And you?""

""I am going to have a brief, productive conversation with my Chief Operating Officer.""

I gently transferred Chloe back into Emily’s arms. The little girl stirred, whined softly, and nestled against her mother’s chest. I leaned down, bringing my face level with Emily’s. ""Trust me, Em. Just this once. Give me two hours to handle what I should have handled twenty-six months ago.""

Emily searched my face, looking for the cold, ambitious corporate raider she thought had abandoned her. She must have found something else in my eyes, because she gave a single, resolute nod. ""Two hours, Adrian. Not a minute more.""

I watched Frank escort them down the private baggage corridor before I turned around, buttoned my cashmere overcoat, and strode through the heavy oak doors into the executive reception room.

Tessa Caldwell was standing beside the mahogany conference table, clad in an immaculate charcoal-gray tailored suit, her blonde hair pulled back into a razor-sharp chignon. She held a black Montblanc pen in her right hand, tapping it impatiently against a stack of leather-bound folios.

""Adrian, thank God,"" she sighed with manufactured relief, stepping forward with a stack of papers. ""I thought your flight got diverted to Milwaukee. Clearhaven’s lawyers are already on the secure video bridge. All we need is your wet signature on the indemnification rider and Section 14, and the deal is locked before the markets open on Friday.""

I didn't take the pen. I didn't sit down. I simply walked over to the center of the room, pulled the folded, wrinkled certified mail receipt from my interior pocket, and dropped it onto the glass table directly between us.

Tessa’s gaze drifted down to the piece of paper. I watched her pupils dilate. The color drained from her cheeks with the speed of an open drain, leaving her complexion as pale as the snow swirling against the windowpanes.

""Recognize the handwriting, Tessa?"" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. ""Or do you need me to call our internal handwriting analyst to verify who signed for my children’s lives?""
