Chapter 6 - Blood on the Highway

The sedans surged forward, attempting to box in the armored Suburban before it could reach the main expressway. Tires screeched across the wet asphalt as the lead vehicle rammed hard into Marco’s front fender.
""Ambush!"" Marco yelled, wrestling the steering wheel as sparks showered across the windshield. ""It’s Moretti’s crew! They were waiting at the perimeter!""
Inside the back cabin, Tessa groaned softly, slipping in and out of consciousness against Dominic's chest. Dominic didn't panic. The icy, calculating monster that had built the Rourke empire took total control. He pulled a heavy semi-automatic pistol from under his arm, racked the slide with one hand, and used his phone to dial Frankie.
""Code Red on Gladwyne Road,"" Dominic stated coldly into the speaker. ""Bring every man we have. Do not take prisoners. Victor sold us out.""
Dominic turned to Marco. ""Do not stop. If you have to push them through a brick wall, keep this engine running. My wife needs an emergency room in ten minutes or she dies.""
Marco slammed his foot onto the accelerator, using the custom steel push-bar on the front of the Suburban to violently shove the attacking sedan aside. Gunfire erupted through the darkness, rounds pinging harmlessly against the bulletproof glass of the passenger windows. Dominic wrapped his entire muscular frame over Tessa, shielding her completely with his body, his hand pressed against her burning cheek.
""Hold on, Tessa,"" he whispered fiercely into her ear while metal crunched outside. ""You didn't survive nineteen weeks of poison to die in the back of my car. Fight for me.""

Two blocks before the hospital turnoff, three of Dominic's black SUVs intercepted the chase, smashing directly into Moretti's tail cars with brutal precision, spinning them across the four-lane highway in a screeching inferno of shredded rubber and twisted steel. Frankie’s men spilled out onto the road with assault rifles, neutralizing the threat in seconds.
Marco cut hard into the emergency ambulance bay of St. Ambrose, tires smoking as he brought the battered vehicle to a halt. The emergency doors flew open, and Dr. Evans was already waiting with an ICU crash team, a gurney, and bags of broad-spectrum antibiotics ready to infuse.
