Chapter 10 - Chair Eleven

One year after the fateful barbecue in Chestnut Hill, the St. Ambrose Comprehensive Cancer Center held an unveiling ceremony for its newly renovated oncology wing. Dominic Rourke had donated twelve million dollars to completely rebuild the fourth floor into a world-class, state-of-the-art treatment facility, equipped with private recovery suites, heated infusion recliners, and private gardens for the patients.
Dozens of doctors, nurses, and hospital board members stood in the open atrium, sipping champagne and applauding as Dominic and Tessa arrived hand in hand. Tessa wore an elegant forest-green evening gown that proudly displayed her bare collarbone. The small, pale scar beneath her left shoulder was completely visible, worn not as a secret shame, but as a warrior’s badge of honor.
Nurse Sarah wiped away a tear as she hugged Tessa tightly. ""You look completely transformed, Mrs. Rourke. You look so healthy.""
""I feel alive, Sarah,"" Tessa smiled warmly. ""Thank you for taking care of me when I had to sit there by myself.""
As the crowd drifted toward the banquet hall, Dominic pulled Tessa gently by the hand, leading her down the quiet, carpeted hallway toward the private treatment suites.
At the very end of the hall, Suite Eleven opened into a magnificent sunroom surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a serene botanical garden with stone fountains and blooming cherry trees. Inside sat a single, plush leather armchair upholstered in deep emerald green. A small brass plaque was affixed to the cherry-wood wall beside it:
Chair Eleven. Dedicated to the fighters who endure in silence, and the love that refuses to let them sit alone.
Dominic stood behind Tessa, wrapping his arms around her waist as she looked out over the sunlit gardens.
""When you sat in that drafty old chair last year, you thought you were protecting me,"" Dominic whispered into her hair, his chin resting against her shoulder. ""You thought my world was too cruel for your weakness.""
Tessa turned in his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck and looking into the dark eyes that now held only warmth, devotion, and peace.

""You taught me that love isn't about being untouchable, Dominic,"" she whispered, kissing him softly on the lips. ""It's about knowing whose hand will hold yours when the poison begins to burn.""
Dominic smiled, holding his wife close against his chest as the afternoon sunlight bathed the room in golden light, whole, healed, and completely unbroken."
