Chapter 6 - The Secret in the Nursery

While Cassandra Morgan sat in a holding cell at the Cook County Department of Corrections, screaming at her defense attorneys to post her multi-million dollar bail, Marcus returned to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The private wing was guarded round-the-clock by armed private security. Marcus cleared the biometric scanner at the door and stepped into the dimly lit room. The continuous beep of the heart monitor filled the air—steady, rhythmic, and strong.

Sitting upright against a pile of pillows, wearing a pale blue sweater, was Lily.

Her color had returned, her cheeks flushed with soft pink warmth. In her hands, she held a cup of warm, decaffeinated tea, brought directly by Dr. Caldwell herself. When she saw Marcus enter, a gentle, tired smile touched her lips.

Marcus crossed the room in two strides, falling to his knees beside the bed. He buried his face into the soft fabric of her blanket, his entire body trembling. ""Lily... God, Lily.""

Lily ran her fingers through his messy hair, her touch soft and infinitely forgiving. ""I heard everything, Marcus. Dr. Caldwell told me what happened while they woke me from the coma.""

Marcus looked up, his eyes bloodshot, haunted by the ghost of his guilt. ""I almost killed you. My selfishness, my weakness... I brought that monster into our world. If I had just been faithful, if I had just honored our vows, you and Grace would never have suffered. I will spend the rest of my life making this right, Lily. If you want a divorce, if you want every dime I own, it's yours. Just tell me you and our baby are safe.""

Lily looked down at her swollen stomach, feeling the firm, reassuring kick of their unborn daughter beneath her palm. She sighed, a deep sound carrying months of unspoken heartache.

""I won't pretend it doesn't break my heart, Marcus,"" she whispered, her voice cracking. ""Finding out about Cassandra hurt worse than the poison. But when the cup broke, when I fell into the dark, all I remembered was your arms catching me. You saved our daughter. You fought for us.""

""I haven't finished fighting,"" Marcus said, his voice turning to steel. ""Cassandra’s legal team is filing an emergency motion for dismissal tomorrow morning. Her family hired Arthur Sterling—the most ruthless trial lawyer in the Midwest. They’re claiming police entrapment, illegal wiretapping, and that Harriet acted alone. They think they can bury this in pretrial motions and buy her freedom.""

""Can they?"" Lily asked, fear flickering in her eyes.

""No,"" Marcus vowed, standing tall. ""Because Cassandra doesn't know that our nursery was finished last week. She doesn't know what is inside that room.""

Two months before the poisoning, during the peak of Cassandra’s subtle stalking of their household, Marcus had upgraded the security across the entire estate. To ensure the baby’s safety, he had contracted a cutting-edge Israeli defense firm to install an integrated, concealed sensor and recording network disguised within the architectural molding and ventilation grates of the master suite, kitchen, and nursery.

When Cassandra had attended the hospital fundraiser as a guest three weeks earlier, she had excused herself to the second floor, claiming she needed to use the powder room. At the time, Marcus thought nothing of it. But after reviewing the master surveillance server that morning, Marcus had discovered something chilling.

Cassandra had walked into the unfinished nursery.

She had stood in the center of the pink-themed room, smiling at the empty crib. Then, she had taken out her compact mirror, unscrewed the base of a silver rattle left on the changing table, and placed a tiny tracking beacon inside before surveying the room’s ventilation ducts with a professional measuring laser. She was casing the house for an assassination long before she ever coerced Harriet.

""She didn't just want you dead, Lily,"" Marcus revealed, showing her the high-definition footage on his tablet. ""She was planning every contingency. She wanted to ensure that even if the tea failed, you wouldn't survive past delivery.""

Lily stared at the footage, tears of horror slipping down her cheeks. ""She is an absolute demon.""

""And tomorrow,"" Marcus said, his jaw locked in cold fury, ""I am going to destroy her in open court.""
