Chapter 2 - The Scent of Cyanide

The waiting room clock ticked with maddening precision. Three in the morning arrived without a single word of relief from the operating theater. Marcus paced the narrow corridor like a caged beast, his tie discarded and his sleeves rolled up to his forearms. Every time the heavy doors swung open, his breath hitched, dreading the sight of a doctor shaking their head.

At 4:15 AM, Detective Nathan Vance from the Chicago Police Department strode down the hall. A veteran investigator with tired eyes and an unyielding jaw, Vance carried an evidence bag containing shards of white porcelain and a stained linen napkin from the ballroom floor.

""Mr. Harrington,"" Vance said quietly, showing his badge. ""I’m sorry to intrude under these conditions, but forensics ran a preliminary field test on the residue inside the broken teacup.""

Marcus snapped his head up. ""What was it?""

""A concentrated derivative of monkshood—aconitine—mixed with a synthetic cardiac glycoside,"" Vance explained, watching Marcus's face closely. ""It’s practically tasteless in hot herbal tea, highly soluble, and engineered to cause rapid heart failure and violent uterine spasms. It mimics severe placental abruption. If your wife had finished the cup, her heart would have stopped in under ten minutes.""

The word hung between them like a guillotine blade. Aconitine. Marcus felt his stomach lurch violently. This wasn't a sudden crime of passion; it was a cold, premeditated execution.

""Who prepared the tea, Mr. Harrington?"" Vance pressed.

""Her personal assistant, Harriet Willis,"" Marcus said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. ""Harriet brought the tray directly from the pantry. But Harriet loved Lily. She wouldn't do this. She couldn't.""

""We picked Ms. Willis up at her apartment an hour ago,"" Vance said calmly. ""She was packing a suitcase. We found ten thousand dollars in cash inside her closet, along with an encrypted burner phone. We’re holding her for questioning right now, but she’s hysterical, claiming she was set up.""

Before Marcus could respond, the surgical doors flew open. Dr. Caldwell stepped into the hallway, pulling off her surgical cap. Her face was pale, lined with exhaustion, but her eyes held a spark of defiant life.

Marcus lunged forward. ""Elena? Tell me!""

""They’re alive, Marcus,"" Caldwell breathed, placing a steadying hand on his shoulder. ""We performed an immediate gastric lavage and administered high-dose atropine alongside monoclonal antibodies. It was a war in there. Lily's heart arrested for ninety seconds, but we got her back.""

""And Grace? The baby?""

""Her heartbeat stabilized after we counteracted the toxins. We didn't have to deliver prematurely tonight, which is a miracle. Lily is in a medically induced coma to protect her neurological functions and prevent premature labor contractions. The next forty-eight hours will decide everything, but for now... they survived.""

Marcus collapsed back against the wall, burying his face in his hands as quiet sobs wracked his frame. He had been granted an impossible second chance. Relief washed over him like a tidal wave, quickly replaced by a dark, scorching anger that burned away every ounce of his previous hesitation.

He looked over at Detective Vance. ""I know who gave Harriet that money.""

""You have a suspect?""

""Cassandra Morgan,"" Marcus said, pronouncing the name like a curse. ""She wanted my wife dead. She wanted my child dead. And she thinks her money and social standing will insulate her from the consequences.""

""Accusations require ironclad evidence, Mr. Harrington,"" Vance warned. ""Especially against someone with the Morgan family's legal resources. If we move too early, her high-priced attorneys will shred the charges before we even see an indictment.""

Marcus straightened his posture. The shattered, weeping husband vanished, replaced by the calculating predator who had dismantled corporate rivals for a decade. ""Then we don't move early. We build a trap so airtight she won't even realize she's locked in until the cell door slams shut.""
