Chapter 3 - The Golden Web

By sunrise, Marcus had transformed his corner office on the fortieth floor of Harrington Tower into a clandestine command center. He bypassed the company's regular legal counsel and summoned Julian Vance—a ruthless former federal prosecutor turned private defense powerhouse, and brother to Detective Nathan Vance.

Julian set a thick leather briefcase on Marcus’s desk, eyeing the billionaire with sharp skepticism. ""Nathan briefed me. Marcus, you committed adultery with a woman who turned out to be a sociopath. Legally and socially, you are walking on glass. If Cassandra catches wind that you suspect her, she will destroy the paper trail, eliminate Harriet as a witness, and vanish offshore.""

""She won't vanish,"" Marcus said, staring out over the misty Chicago skyline. ""Cassandra didn't just want Lily dead to punish me. She wants my empire. She believes she is entitled to it. She's a narcissist. She will come back to finish what she started, or to claim the prize she thinks she earned.""

""What’s your plan?"" Julian asked, unzipping the case.

""We play along,"" Marcus replied coldness dripping from his tone. ""The media thinks Lily is clinging to life on total brain support, and that the baby didn't make it through the night. I instructed Dr. Caldwell to seal the hospital wing under private security. No one enters Lily's room without my biometric clearance. To the outside world, I am a broken, desperate man ready to collapse.""

Within three hours, the Harrington PR team released a carefully worded, somber statement: Lily Harrington remains in critical condition following an unexpected medical emergency; the Harrington family requests privacy during this devastating tragedy.

The trap was sprung.

That afternoon, while Marcus sat in his darkened penthouse study, the heavy oak doors opened. Without knocking, Cassandra Morgan stepped inside. She wore a tailored black coat, her golden hair swept back with elegant precision. In her hand was a thermos of artisanal soup and a look of practiced, sorrowful empathy.

""Marcus,"" she whispered, gliding across the room. ""I came as soon as I saw the news. Oh God, darling. I couldn't bear the thought of you being alone in this cavernous house.""

Marcus forced himself not to recoil as she placed her manicured hand over his shoulder. The smell of her floral perfume made him want to rip the desk in half, but he lowered his head, feigning hollow defeat. ""She’s not waking up, Cassandra. The doctors say... there's massive damage. And the baby..."" He choked on his fake words, letting his shoulders slump.

Cassandra sank onto her knees beside his leather armchair, leaning her cheek against his leg in an intimate gesture of possession. ""It’s a tragedy, Marcus. A horrific tragedy. But you have to be strong. You have an empire to run. You can't let yourself fall apart.""

""I don't care about the empire,"" Marcus whispered, staring blankly ahead. ""Without a family, what is all this for?""

""You can have another family,"" Cassandra said softly, her venom laced with silk. ""With someone who understands the weight of your crown. Someone who won't break under the pressure of your world. Lily was sweet, Marcus, but she was never built for this life. You know that deep down.""

Marcus looked down into her eyes. Beneath the veneer of sympathy, he saw triumph dancing in her dark pupils. She truly believed she had won.

""I pushed you away because of the pregnancy,"" Marcus murmured, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, playing his role to perfection. ""I was terrified of losing my reputation. But seeing her like that... I realize how fragile everything is.""

May you like

""You made a mistake, but I forgive you,"" Cassandra breathed, rising to press her lips against his cheek. ""We can fix this. Together.""

As she embraced him, Marcus caught the reflection of his own eyes in the dark window pane. They were cold as granite. In his breast pocket, a hidden micro-recorder captured every whisper, every breath, and every subtle admission of her calculated ambition. The golden web was spinning, and Cassandra was walking straight into the center.
