Chapter 6 - The Shadow Over Boston Harbor

When I woke up the next morning, the sunlight was streaming through the sheer curtains of the third-floor bedroom.

The space beside me was empty, but the pillow still held the faint scent of cedarwood and rain.

On the nightstand, resting beside a steaming mug of black tea with cinnamon, was a folded piece of stationery.

Meeting the district attorney at 9:00. Stay in the brownstone. Security is doubled. You are safe here. — G.

I smiled softly at the note, tracing the sharp, decisive penmanship with my fingertips.

The cold, cynical contract that had bound us together had dissolved in the dark, replaced by a fierce, unspoken allegiance.

I showered, pulled on a warm wool sweater and dark denim, and carried my tea down to the library to review the rest of Everett’s paper trail.

For three hours, I cross-referenced the bank accounts with the Massachusetts corporate registry, building an airtight timeline of fraud, embezzlement, and structural sabotage.

Everett hadn't just murdered Miles; he had diverted thirty-two million dollars from the family shipping trust into offshore private security accounts.

Around 1:00 P.M., the library door opened, and Charlotte Vale entered the room.

Graham’s mother was dressed in an impeccable cream pantsuit, her silver hair styled into an elegant chignon, her face as regal and unreadable as ever.

"Good afternoon, Audrey," Charlotte said, taking a seat on the leather sofa opposite my desk.

"Charlotte," I responded, closing the laptop halfway. "Graham is at the district attorney's office."

"I know where my son is," Charlotte said calmly, folding her manicured hands in her lap.

"I came to see the woman who managed to do in three months what I couldn't do in four years."

I looked at her, surprised. "What are you talking about?"

"Graham was eating himself alive with hatred, Audrey," Charlotte said, her voice dropping into a rare tone of maternal vulnerability.

"When Miles died, Graham stopped living. He turned this house into a mausoleum and himself into a monster to survive the guilt."

Charlotte leaned forward, her sharp blue eyes holding mine with total sincerity.

"I offered your father that debt relief because I needed a bride to secure the trust, yes," she admitted.

"But I chose you because I knew your spine wouldn't break under his coldness. I needed someone who could show him that truth matters more than vengeance."

"He knows the truth now," I said softly. "It was Everett all along."

Charlotte's jaw tightened into the familiar, dangerous Vale line.

"Then Everett's time in Boston is officially over," she said with absolute finality.

Before I could reply, the mansion's perimeter alarm erupted into a shrill, pulsing scream.
