Chapter 5 - The Cracks in the Armor

The silence inside the grand bedroom was suffocating.

Graham sat entirely motionless, staring at the paper as if the words were written in acid.

For four agonizing years, he had channeled his grief and rage into hating my father, believing my family had cut corners and killed his brother.

Now, the cold, immutable truth sat between us under the desk lamp: his own uncle had murdered Miles for a profit margin.

"My father didn't kill your brother, Graham," I whispered softly across the desk. "He was set up to take the blame so Everett could seize control of the waterfront."

Graham didn't yell, and he didn't throw the glass against the wall.

He slowly buried his face in his large, scarred hands, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, devastating grief.

Seeing the most feared man in Boston crumble before my eyes shattered whatever distance was left between us.

I walked around the desk, hesitated for a brief second, and placed my hand gently on his tense shoulder.

"Graham," I said softly.

He didn't pull away.

Instead, he reached up, wrapping his fingers around my wrist, holding onto me like a drowning man grabbing a lifeline.

"I blamed him," Graham whispered, his voice broken and raw. "I held that debt over your head. I made your life miserable because I thought I was avenging Miles."

"You were protecting his memory," I replied, kneeling beside his chair so our eyes were level. "You were doing what you thought was right."

Graham looked at me, his gaze scanning every feature of my face, stripping away the ruthless boss until only a wounded man remained.

"Why aren't you screaming at me?" he asked quietly. "I forced you into this marriage. I treated you like an intruder in my home."

"Because you cook aglio e olio when you can't sleep," I whispered, a faint smile touching my lips despite the tears prickling my eyes.

"And because you leave me notes on household schedules."

Graham’s hand moved from my wrist to the side of my neck, his rough thumb gently stroking my cheekbone.

"Audrey," he breathed, his voice thick with a warmth I had never heard from him before.

He leaned in slowly, closing the space between us until his lips met mine in a tender, breathless kiss that wiped away three months of cold indifference.

It wasn't the kiss of a contractual arrangement or an underworld transaction.

It was the kiss of a man who had finally realized that the woman he tried not to love had become the only thing holding his world together.
