Chapter 9 - Checkmate on the 50th Floor

At 2:30 PM on Friday, the boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Sullivan Tower was an arena of pure corporate warfare.

Evelyn Sullivan sat at the head of the marble conference table, flanked by four high-powered defense attorneys and Richard Vance, the billionaire patriarch of Vance Holdings. She looked triumphant, holding a gold fountain pen, ready to sign the execution papers on her son's life work.

""It's 2:45,"" Evelyn announced coldly. ""Ethan’s proxy vote has not arrived. The tender offer is legally uncontested. We proceed with the liquidation of his executive status.""

""Not so fast, Grandma,"" a young, cheerful voice chirped from the double glass doors.

Sophie skipped into the boardroom wearing her favorite blue sparkly dress, holding a pink glitter clipboard. Behind her strode Noah, sharp in his charcoal suit, flanked by Ethan and Lucas.

Richard Vance stood up in irritation. ""What is the meaning of this? This is an executive shareholder vote, not daycare!""

Noah walked directly to the empty seat opposite Evelyn, pulled out the heavy leather chair, and sat down with adult gravity. He placed his black portfolio onto the polished marble with a solid, echoing thud.

""My name is Noah Sullivan,"" he announced to the twenty-four executives sitting around the table. ""And this is Sophie Sullivan. As co-trustees of the Sullivan Family Trust, representing twenty percent of class-A super-voting shares, we formally table Motion 404: The Immediate Freezing of Vance Holdings' Acquisition.""

Evelyn laughed scornfully. ""You little brat! You have no standing here! You're a minor!""

Lucas stepped forward, tossing a federal court injunction onto the center of the table. ""Under the Illinois Uniform Transfers to Minors Act, combined with the Sullivan Charter of 1998, the Sullivan heirs possess absolute veto power over any hostile acquisition initiated by secondary blood relatives. The motion has already been certified by Judge Franklin of the Cook County Chancery Division fifteen minutes ago.""

Color drained from Richard Vance’s face. He turned to Evelyn, his voice dropping into panic. ""You told me the trust transfer hadn't cleared the registrar!""

""It cleared at 9:01 AM this morning,"" Ethan spoke up, stepping forward and placing his hands firmly on Noah’s and Sophie’s shoulders. ""Furthermore, the SEC has just accepted a formal filing regarding Vance Holdings’ illegal market manipulation and insider trading coordinated with Evelyn Sullivan over the last forty-eight hours.""

Two federal marshals in plainclothes stepped into the back of the boardroom.

Evelyn’s gold pen slipped from her trembling fingers and rolled off the table, hitting the carpet with a dull click. She looked at Ethan, then at the two grandchildren she had tried to erase from the world.

""Ethan... please,"" Evelyn gasped, her voice trembling with the realization that her reign was completely destroyed. ""I am your mother.""

May you like

""You were,"" Ethan said softly. ""Until you tried to steal my children’s future. Security, please escort Mrs. Sullivan and Mr. Vance off the premises.""

As the marshals led a weeping Evelyn away, the remaining board members sat in stunned silence. Sophie leaned toward the center conference microphone, cleared her throat, and said, ""Meeting adjourned! Anyone want ice cream?""
