Chapter 5 - Blood and Betrayal

The tension in the suite became suffocating. Outside the high-rise windows, thunder rumbled across Lake Michigan, signaling an impending autumn downpour.
""Ethan, be quiet,"" Evelyn commanded her son, waving her manicured hand dismissively. ""You’re compromised by sentimentality. Men always get weak when faced with a former mistress and sob stories. I am protecting your company. I protected it ten years ago when she was nothing but a broke waitress trying to tie an anchor around your neck, and I am protecting it now.""
""You protected me?"" Ethan whispered. His voice was no longer that of a remorseful ex-husband. It was the low, dangerous growl of a man discovering he had been poisoned by his own mother for ten years. ""Did you forge that letter, Mother?""
Evelyn didn't blink. ""She was unsuitable. You were meant to marry Victoria Vance and merge our banking portfolios. A boy from the North Shore does not marry a girl from the South Side who works twelve-hour shifts at a diner. I did what any mother with vision would do.""
""Did you forge the letter?"" Ethan roared, taking a massive step toward her. Arthur Sterling instinctively stepped back.
""Yes! I did!"" Evelyn snapped, losing her aristocratic composure. ""And I would do it again! Look at what you accomplished without her! You built Sullivan Group! You became a billionaire! Would you have done that changing diapers in a damp basement apartment on forty thousand dollars a year? You owe me your entire empire!""
""I owe you my life's greatest misery,"" Ethan said, his voice dropping to a trembling register of absolute fury.
He turned toward Arthur Sterling. ""Arthur, take your non-disclosure agreement off that table and burn it.""
Sterling frowned, adjusting his glasses. ""Ethan, the board has fiduciary responsibility. If you don't settle this scandal cleanly, we will invoke clause nine of the shareholder charter and remove you as Chief Executive Officer.""
""Then invoke it,"" Ethan said without a heartbeat of hesitation.
Everyone in the room stared at him. Even Noah looked up from his screen, genuinely surprised.
""What did you say?"" Sterling asked, stunned.
""I said invoke it,"" Ethan repeated, staring down the powerful chairman. ""I own forty-two percent of voting shares. With the proxy votes of the minority tech holders who back me personally, your little board coup will fail by morning. But even if you strip me of the CEO title, take it. Take the towers, take the private jet, take the stock options. Ten years ago, I gave up the woman I loved because I was terrified of being poor. I will not trade my children for corporate shares. Not tonight. Not ever.""
Evelyn looked as if she had been slapped across the face. ""Ethan! Have you completely lost your mind? Over these bastards?""
Ethan didn't shout. He walked over to the door, pulled it wide open, and pointed into the corridor.
""Get out, Mother. And if you ever come within one mile of Claire, Noah, or Sophie again, I will personally hand the SEC the offshore account records from your Cayman shell company that you used to embezzle my father’s trust.""
May you like
Evelyn gasped, clutching her pearls in genuine, suffocating panic. Without another word, she gathered her purse and scuttled out into the hallway like a frightened insect. Sterling lingered for a second, sighed in defeat, picked up his folder, and followed her out.
The door clicked shut. Ethan stood there in the quiet room, his chest heaving, completely alone against the world he had spent a decade conquering.
