Chapter 7 - Ambush at Elm Street

The neon glow of rain-drenched storefronts reflected off the wet asphalt of Elm Street as Dante’s three-vehicle convoy pulled into the alleyway behind Elena’s apartment building. The neighborhood was quiet, save for the hum of distant traffic and the rhythmic squeak of a rusty fire escape swaying in the wind.
“Marco, take the rear exit and the roof,” Dante ordered into his headset as he stepped out into the damp chill. “Nobody enters or leaves this perimeter without my authorization.”
Elena stepped out beside him, refusing to remain in the reinforced car despite his protests. “I know which floorboard creaks. If anyone is inside, I’ll know before you do.”
Dante nodded once, acknowledging her stubborn resolve. He kept her tucked behind his broad shoulder as they climbed the narrow, dimly lit staircase of the apartment building. The yellow police tape across the shattered door of Apartment 3B had been torn in half, fluttering weakly in the draft.
Dante entered first, his weapon drawn and swept in a tight arc across the ruined living room. Overturned bookshelves, scattered papers, and broken ceramic mugs littered the linoleum. The apartment smelled of stale rain and cold fear.
“Bedroom is on the left,” Elena whispered, her fingers gripping Dante’s belt loop as they moved down the short hallway.
The closet door stood half-open. On the top shelf, wedged behind a stack of winter blankets, rested a dusty black velvet violin case. Elena reached up, pulled it down, and clicked open the brass latches. Nestled beneath the velvet lining next to the bow was a sleek, silver USB drive shaped like a vintage skeleton key.
“Here it is,” Elena breathed, holding it up into the dim streetlight filtering through the window.
Before Dante could take it, the sharp shatter of glass exploded behind them.
A high-powered rifle bullet tore through the window frame, embedding itself in the drywall inches from Elena’s head. Dante lunged, tackling Elena to the carpeted floor and covering her body completely with his own as a barrage of automatic gunfire chewed through the exterior wall.
“Sniper on the opposite rooftop!” Dante shouted into his radio, his voice calm despite the plaster raining down upon them. “Return fire! Marco, take the nest!”
From the street below, the thunderous roar of suppressed automatic weapons erupted as Dante’s perimeter team engaged the shooters. Gunfire echoed through the alleyway like firecrackers in a tin can.
Dante rolled onto his back, dragging Elena tightly against his chest into the dead angle beneath the solid oak dresser. His eyes swept over her face with fierce urgency. “Are you hit? Look at me, Elena. Are you bleeding?”
“I’m okay! I’m okay!” she gasped, her hands trembling as she clutched the silver drive against her chest. “They knew we were coming!”
“Marcone’s desperate,” Dante growled, pulling his sidearm and firing three calculated rounds through the shattered window frame toward muzzle flashes dancing on the brick building across the street. A scream echoed from the opposite roof, followed by the dull thud of a body hitting a fire escape landing.
“Target eliminated, boss!” Marco’s voice crackled through the radio. “Roof is clear! We have two vehicles approaching from the north avenue—Marcone’s cleanup crew!”
“We’re moving,” Dante said, hauling Elena to her feet and keeping his body between her and the window. “Stay low, move fast.”
They sprinted down the hallway into the living room just as the apartment’s front door burst open. A hitman in a dark trench coat raised a shotgun, leveling it directly at Elena’s chest.
Dante didn't hesitate. He stepped squarely into the line of fire, driving his shoulder into the man’s sternum with bone-crushing force before the trigger could be pulled. The shotgun discharged harmlessly into the ceiling. In a blur of lethal movement, Dante disarmed the attacker, struck him across the temple with the heavy steel slide of his pistol, and kicked him down the stairwell.
Dante grabbed Elena’s hand, pulling her down the rear fire escape into the pouring rain. They hit the wet alleyway just as Marco’s SUV slid to a halt beside them, the rear door swinging open.
Dante shoved Elena inside, diving in behind her as bullets ricocheted off the armored glass panels with deafening clangs. The driver floored the accelerator, the tires screaming against the wet asphalt as the SUV leaped forward, leaving the burning chaos of Elm Street behind in a cloud of exhaust and steam.
Elena collapsed against Dante’s chest, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her hands were stained with soot, but her fingers were still clamped tightly around the silver key drive.

“We have it,” she whispered, laughing through tears of adrenaline. “We have it, Dante.”
Dante wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her rain-soaked hair, his heart hammering violently against hers. For the first time in six years, he wasn't just surviving the darkness—he was winning.
