Chapter 5 - Hidden Truths

The morning sun broke through the autumn clouds, casting long golden rectangles across the hardwood floors of the Belmonte estate. Elena woke up in a sprawling guest bedroom wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets, feeling more rested than she had in three years.

Beside her, Lily was still sound asleep, breathing peacefully without the labored whistle of her asthma. On the bedside table sat a silver tray containing fresh croissants, sliced fruit, and a cup of steaming coffee, alongside a handwritten note in sharp, elegant cursive: Sleep as long as you need. You are home.

Elena slipped out of bed, pulling on a clean gray cashmere sweater and dark trousers that Maria had laid out for her. She quietly exited the bedroom and walked down the wide corridor, drawn toward the sound of voices coming from Dante’s private study at the end of the hall.

The mahogany door was cracked open an inch. Elena paused, not intending to eavesdrop, but the mention of a familiar name rooted her to the floorboards.

“...the forensic audit was completed at four this morning, boss,” Marco’s gruff voice reported from inside. “The twelve thousand missing from the Ashford Grand wasn't an isolated incident. Vale has been running a skimming operation through the banquet accounts for over two years. Total embezzlement exceeds eight hundred thousand.”

“That’s between Vale and the prosecutors,” Dante replied dismissively. “What about the other matter? The vehicle registration I asked you to trace?”

There was a rustle of heavy paper. “That’s where it gets complicated, Dante. We pulled the cold case file on Adrien’s car from the Cicero precinct archives. The burned vehicle had an altered VIN number. It didn't match Adrien’s Audi.”

Elena’s hand flew to her mouth. She leaned closer to the crack in the door, her heart hammering against her ribs.

“What are you saying, Marco?” Dante’s voice was suddenly razor-sharp, stripped of all calm.

“The blood evidence in Cicero was contaminated, boss. We ran the DNA markers again using modern sequencing. It wasn't Adrien’s blood. It belonged to an associate of the Marcone family who vanished around the same time.” Marco paused, his voice heavy with significance. “And there’s more. A trust fund was quietly established four years ago in Geneva under the name Brooks Holdings. The beneficiary listed is Lily Brooks. But the depositor’s signature matches the handwriting of a man who worked as a junior accountant at the Ashford Grand under an assumed name until six months ago.”

Inside the study, Dante stood up so abruptly that his leather chair scraped against the floor. “Are you telling me Adrien is alive?”

“I’m telling you Adrien survived the Cicero ambush,” Marco answered carefully. “He went into deep hiding because he believed the hit was ordered from inside your inner circle. He took a low-level desk job at the Ashford under the alias Julian Vance to investigate who betrayed him. And while he was there... he must have crossed paths with Elena’s father before the parents were killed.”

Elena gasped, unable to contain the shock. The sound betrayed her presence.

The door swung wide open instantly. Dante stood in the threshold, his dark eyes wide with shock as he looked down at her pale, trembling figure.

“Elena,” Dante breathed, reaching out to steady her. “How much did you hear?”

“Julian Vance?” Elena whispered, her eyes searching his face in bewilderment. “Julian was our neighbor. When my parents died three years ago, he was the one who helped me with the funeral arrangements! He was the one who helped me set up Lily’s high school enrollment! He told me he was an accountant from Boston!”

Dante’s hands gripped her shoulders firmly, his thumbs brushing the soft wool of her sweater. “Elena, look at this photograph.”

He pulled a laminated identification card from his desk and held it before her eyes. It was a younger man with dark wavy hair, high cheekbones, and the unmistakable, penetrating hazel eyes of the Moretti bloodline.

“That’s Julian,” Elena gasped, tears springing to her eyes. “He disappeared six months ago. He left an envelope with three months’ rent and told me he had to settle a debt from his past. He said if he didn't leave, dangerous men would find him.”

Dante dropped his head against her shoulder, a ragged, shuddering breath escaping his chest. The ruthless boss of Chicago’s underworld was trembling. For six years, he had mourned a ghost, carrying the crushing guilt of an older brother’s failure, while all along, his brother had been living three blocks from the Ashford Grand, watching over the very girl who had just stumbled into Dante’s life.

“He’s alive,” Dante whispered into her hair, his arms wrapping around her with overwhelming emotion. “My brother is alive.”
