Chapter 6 - The Spider’s Web

The atmosphere inside the Belmonte estate shifted from defensive refuge to a war room of relentless tactical precision. Dante stood before a massive digital display board in the library, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, analyzing bank transfers, hotel security logs, and surveillance captures from the past six months.

Elena sat at the long conference table, Lily beside her sipping chamomile tea. The two sisters listened in stunned silence as Marco pinned pieces of a six-year-old puzzle together on the screen.

“Adrien went underground because he suspected an inside betrayal,” Marco explained, pointing to a photograph of an elderly man with silver hair and an elegant charcoal three-piece suit. “And he was right. The leak didn't come from your street crews, Dante. It came from Vincent Marcone, the head of the Allied Hotel Syndicate and the primary investor behind the Ashford Grand.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. “Marcone. He sat at my table at the Ashford last night. He smiled at me while Richard Vale attempted to frame Elena.”

“Marcone discovered Adrien was alive three weeks ago,” Marco continued, tapping the screen. “Julian Vance—Adrien—was working in the Ashford’s lower-level archive rooms, piecing together Marcone’s money laundering pipeline. When Marcone realized who Julian really was, he ordered Vale to manufacture an emergency to lock down the hotel archives. The twelve thousand dollar theft was a smoke screen to seize all security drives, purge the employee roster, and flush Adrien out of hiding.”

“And Elena got caught in the crossfire,” Dante concluded, his voice vibrating with suppressed fury. “Richard needed a scapegoat on shift to sign a confession so they could legally seize the locker rooms and audit logs before the federal morning deadline.”

Lily leaned forward, adjusting her glasses. “Julian gave me a flash drive,” she said suddenly, her small voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room.

Dante and Marco both froze, their eyes snapping to the sixteen-year-old girl.

“What did you say, Lily?” Dante asked, keeping his voice extraordinarily calm.

“Before Julian left six months ago,” Lily explained, her fingers twisting the edge of her blanket. “He gave me a silver flash drive shaped like an antique key. He told me it contained his family’s genealogy project, and that if anything ever happened to him, or if men in dark suits ever came asking about him, I should keep it hidden inside my old violin case in the bedroom closet.”

Elena stared at her sister in utter disbelief. “Lily! Why didn't you tell me this before?”

“He made me promise, El!” Lily pleaded, her eyes welling with tears. “He said telling you would put you in danger. He said as long as nobody knew I had it, we were safe!”

“The violin case,” Dante said, turning immediately to Marco. “When you swept their apartment on Elm Street, did you see an instrument case?”

Marco frowned, his brow furrowing in concentration. “The living room was ransacked, but the bedroom closets weren't touched. Graves’s thugs only grabbed the girl and ran. The apartment is still under active police tape.”

“We go now,” Dante said, grabbing his jacket from the back of his chair.

“Dante, wait,” Elena said, rising from the table and stepping in front of him. “If Vincent Marcone knows you took me and Lily, he knows you’re digging into the Ashford’s records. The moment you show up at that apartment, he’ll know we’re looking for whatever Adrien left behind. It’s an ambush waiting to happen.”

Dante looked down at her, a faint, dangerous smile touching the corner of his lips. “You’re learning how this world works, Elena. But you’re forgetting one crucial detail.”

“What’s that?”

“Marcone thinks I am searching for Adrien out of guilt,” Dante said softly, reaching out to gently cup the side of her neck where the bruises had already begun to fade under the care of his physicians. “He has no idea that I am doing this to give you and Lily your lives back. A man fighting for money is dangerous. A man fighting for the woman who holds his soul is unstoppable.”

Elena’s heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her throat at the intensity of his words. Before she could answer, Dante turned to his men. “Arm the convoy. We’re going to retrieve my brother’s key.”
