Chapter 6 - The Glass Barrier

The fifth floor of New York-Presbyterian Hospital was bathed in the harsh, fluorescent reality of modern medicine. It smelled of antiseptic and ozone, a sterile purgatory where money, power, and corporate empires meant absolutely nothing.

Gabriel stepped out of the private elevator, his ruined coat left behind in the car. He wore a clean hospital scrub top given to him by a nurse, but nothing could conceal the bruises along his cheekbone or the exhaustion carved into his features.

Rachel Sloan stood near the waiting room coffee station, holding a paper cup with both hands. When she saw Gabriel approach, her posture stiffened into defensive hostility.

""Don't come near her,"" Rachel said, her voice trembling with fury. ""You brought this on her. You and your disgusting world.""

Gabriel stopped six feet away. He kept his hands at his sides, his head lowered. For the first time in his life, the titan of New York real estate looked completely defenseless.

""How is she?"" Gabriel asked. His voice was hoarse, stripped of all authority. ""Please, Rachel. Just tell me how they are.""

Rachel looked at his bruised face, at the split knuckles, at the sheer terror vibrating behind his usually guarded eyes. Some of the venom drained from her expression, replaced by the grim gravity of the situation.

""She suffered a partial placental abruption during the crash,"" Rachel said quietly. ""The trauma from the impact... the stress. They had to perform an emergency cesarean section forty minutes ago.""

Gabriel’s breath caught in his throat. He felt the floor tilt beneath his shoes. ""And the baby?""

""She’s alive,"" Rachel said, swallowing hard. ""Two pounds, eleven ounces. She’s in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Natalie is awake, but they're monitoring her for internal bleeding.""

""Can I see her?""

""She doesn't want to see you, Gabriel,"" Rachel said bluntly. ""She left your ring on the counter. She signed an affidavit authorizing me to file for legal separation the moment she’s discharged. You got Kingsbridge. You won your war. Leave her alone.""

""There is no Kingsbridge,"" Gabriel said.

Rachel blinked, caught off guard. ""What?""

""The Southern District raided Vieri Tower thirty minutes ago,"" Gabriel said, leaning against the hallway wall as if his legs could no longer support his weight. ""I handed over the unredacted ledgers. Sebastian is under arrest. Thomas is in custody. I surrendered my passport to federal investigators downstairs, and my legal team is preparing my formal deposition for nine o’clock tomorrow morning.""

Rachel stared at him, her legal mind struggling to comprehend the magnitude of what he was saying. ""You turned state's evidence on your own company? Gabriel... you’re facing criminal charges. You could lose your entire personal fortune.""

""I don't care,"" Gabriel whispered. He looked down the long corridor toward the heavy double doors marked NICU - Authorized Personnel Only. ""The only thing I owned that was ever worth having is fighting for her life behind those doors.""

Rachel watched him for a long moment. She saw the absolute, crushing sincerity in a man who had spent his life treating people like chess pieces. Finally, she exhaled a long breath and stepped aside.

""The incubator is bay four,"" Rachel said quietly. ""Wash your hands twice before you go in. And don't you dare upset her.""

Gabriel nodded once, his throat too tight to speak, and walked through the doors into the quiet sanctuary of the intensive care unit.
